WORK LOCATION

  • This position is flexible to be located anywhere within the traditional Southern Company Generation footprint (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi) – Birmingham or Atlanta would be preferred.

  • Relocation assistance is available if you do not already live within a reasonable commute distance.

PLEASE NOTE: This position will be filled as a level 6 or 7 based on the relevant experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

JOB SUMMARY

This position supports the operations and supervisory controls activities of Southern Company’s gas turbine and combined cycle fleets within the Technical Shared Services – I&C organization. The position will be responsible for supporting activities associated with assuring that Southern Company’s gas turbine fleet operates in the most reliable and efficient manner possible. This position’s primary focus will be on the combustion turbine proper; however, support for associated systems, including auxiliaries as well as steam turbines across the fleet may be required.

This position is accountable for the technical direction and/or execution of:

  • Providing operational oversight and troubleshooting assistance for the fleet of gas turbines and combined cycle units, specifically working with plant personnel to troubleshoot, mitigate, and develop corrective actions necessary to improve unit operations.

  • Developing and implementing operational enhancements resulting in increased unit reliability, flexibility, or operability

  • Providing consulting services and technical assistance during turbine outages involving controls changes or tuning.

  • Investigating and troubleshooting steam turbine control and operational issues.

  • Assisting plant and corporate management to manage individual sites as a fleet or CC/CT’s

  • Monitoring daily plant performance and operational issues to optimize the fleet’s effectiveness.

  • Taking a lead role in improving CC/CT operations through the Operations’ Review Board activities, inter-company technical forums, plant site activities, etc.

  • Assisting in the development and delivery of CC/CT training, as needed

  • Working with industry experts and OEM’s to further improve the reliability and performance of the CC/CT assets.

  • This position does require extensive travel (approximately 70%) primarily within the Southern Company fleet, with occasional travel outside the Southern Company system.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years CC/CT plant or associated industry experience is required.

  • Extensive experience in CC/CT plant operations is required.

  • Extensive experience in GE MkVIe, MHI Netmation or Siemens T3000 turbine control systems and strategies is required.

  • Experience in CC/CT plant maintenance is preferred. The incumbent needs to be technically proficient in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and machine design and possess a broad technical knowledge of engineering, turbine maintenance and or start up experience.

  • The incumbent must possess strong project management and operational analytical skills and must be able to manage multiple assignments.

  • The incumbent must have strong teamwork skills and the ability to work with customers/stakeholders and be involved in the processes required for developing solutions.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are also required since studies, reports, and evaluations are often presented to upper level and executive management.

  • Managerial, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required to organize, coordinate, and direct the activities of various team members on multi-discipline projects within established budgets and schedules. While serving as a project lead or field engineer, has interfaced with operators, plant engineers, and O&M and plant managers.

  • Incumbent must have the interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with bargaining unit employees, vendors, and plant management. Regularly interfaces with operations personnel. Has been recommended by plant management.

  • The incumbent must actively participate in and contribute to applicable industry forums and committees.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position does require extensive travel (approximately 70%) primarily within the Southern Company fleet.

  • Some travel outside the Southern Company system to other sites and shops will also be required.

  • Outage and repair schedules will often require working over weekends and at night to assure that the proper repairs or corrective actions are performed. This may include working through some holiday periods. Nature of the work may require mobilization on very short notice.
