*Scheduled Work Hours: *Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Job may require work outside normally scheduled hours.
*Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities: *
The position is responsible for leading and coordinating all the work activities of the outside contractors performing work on KCP&L’s high voltage transmission system; including 69 kV, 161 kV, 230 kV and 345 kV systems, ensuring that public safety, system reliability and availability are maintained as a priority. The position provides and coordinates support and resources from KCP&L and Westar Energy that are necessary for contractors to accomplish their work. This position insures that the field inspections of the system are conducted and responses to problems identified and effectively controlled. The position is also responsible for directing emergency response to storms, outages etc. as well as scheduling and being responsible for holds. The position is the primary landowner contact along 2500 miles of right of way and makes certain that all customer and right of way landowner issues and concerns are effectively handled. This position is responsible for the field QAQC of the contracted work to be accomplished and supports the departments projected Capital and O&M spend of nearly $20 million annually and asset management of the transmission systems estimated plant value of $700 M.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensures that the transmission system contractor performance meets the safety, quality, and reliability requirements established by the company. Provides effective coordination of contractor work crews and required equipment for performing construction and maintenance activities throughout the entire KCP&L high voltage transmission system by directing work through the contractor general foreman to meet the scope and schedule requirements of the project. Coordinates the work site activities of the contractor crews, with landowners, developers, governmental agencies, other contractors, public safety agencies, and KCP&L crews.
Responsible for securing, in a time effective manner, all KCP&L and Westar Energy supplied construction and maintenance material necessary for the contractors to perform their work by working closely with other department personnel, Material Control, Transportation, Engineering, Environmental, Purchasing and other unspecified departments.
Serves as key contact person for implementing any required field activities in response to system emergencies on a twenty four hour, seven day week requirement.
Responsible for all Right of Way activities which include fence and gate construction and land restoration activities caused by construction and maintenance activities. Assures public safety when Right of Way encroachments are found which have not been approved by engineering.
Develops and provides training to staff and specific contractor personnel who perform various operation and maintenance functions on the transmissions underground system. Underground system functions include inspections, including pumping plants, alarm response, and foreign contractor monitoring during encroachment activities.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED is required
Bachelor degree in Electrical or Structural engineering preferred.
Position requires 5 or more years’ experience in Substation or Transmission systems, electric utility construction, maintenance, and/or operations experience.
Supervisory or leadership experience is preferred.
Project Management skills are highly desired for this position
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Advanced ability to influence safety awareness and immediately address safety related issues.
Advanced leadership, interpersonal, communication (oral and written), human relation, communication, and project management skills are necessary for this position.
Strong ability to execute goals and objectives.
Solid verbal/written communications.
Strong working knowledge of Transmission line construction and maintenance work, processes, procedures and safety practices
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing:
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Office and field working conditions. Requires frequent visits to the field in all types of weather conditions. Some overnight travel required. Must have a satisfactory work record including good attendance. May be expected to oversee scheduled work after hours.
