System Protection Engineer – Xcel Energy Services, Inc., Minneapolis, MN.
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field, and five years of experience in power systems protection, or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, and one year of experience in power systems protection.
Must have one year of experience in distribution feeder relay settings; metering and relay drawings; three-phase and DC control drawings, CAPE (computer aided protection engineering) systems software for protection coordination and short-circuit studies and models; using IEEE standards/guides to keep short-circuit model up to date; and working with symmetrical components/networks.
Duties: recommend protection requirements for interconnection of distributed energy resources; analyze system transients and ability to run electromagnetic transient software; ensure compliance with various NERC Reliability Standards; perform assignments and capital projects including event analysis, fault studies using CAPE systems software for protection coordination and short-circuit studies and models, incorrect operations investigations, data testing, protection design, and system modeling; apply and develop standard practices and techniques; assist with planning and design projects, provide technical support and guidance for transmission and substation design, construction and operations areas; prepare schedules and estimates for the system protection portion of projects; analyze reliability and system deficiencies and determine protection requirements; determine cost effective solutions and prepare written recommendations; develop and maintain settings for standard relays and reference documents; create protective microprocessor and electromechanically based relay settings for the real time power systems protection and operation of Xcel Energy’s transmission and distribution feeder relay settings and systems; review metering and relay drawings, and DC, AC control drawings before field work projects; investigate, report causes of protective relay misoperations, and issue recommended solutions in an effort to ensure compliance with FERC standards and maintaining system reliability, using IEEE standards/guides to keep short-circuit model up to date; symmetrical components/networks.
