National Grid Director, Project Management, Gas in Melville, New York

About the Position:

Provide leadership and clear direction for the Gas Project Management organization in the New York jurisdiction. Responsible for the creation, delivery, management and governance of a fully integrated Gas Project Management process which manages significant construction projects from “end to end” to cost and schedule and which supports operating to the highest standards of Safety, health, Environmental, Security and Quality.

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Provide leadership and direction for Gas Project Management organization which includes Gas Transmission, Gas Distribution and LNG Projects to ensure the development and management of a single set of project management processes and policies across the operation that are in line with strategic business objectives.

  • Challenge the existing project management framework to continuously seek ways to do things better, promoting a ‘best practices’ approach to project management in order to achieve National Grid objectives and drive greater efficiencies for the business.

  • Work with management and project sponsors to translate business objectives into clearly defined project proposals, scope, costs and schedules in order to support achievement of National Grid’s project initiatives and goals.

  • Develop and manage ongoing relationships with regulators associated with assigned portfolio of projects in order to keep them up to date with National Grid’s initiatives and ensure projects are in line with regulatory requirements.

  • Work closely with senior leadership to establish and implement strategic corporate objectives; insures that organizational objectives succeed in meeting growth objectives.

  • Recruit, motivate and develop the Gas Project Management team in order to maximize flexibility and effectiveness and promote positive team working and cultural change.

  • Establish operating budgets and target resource allocations to ensure timely and cost effective achievement of all assigned work in line with set objectives.

  • Design, develop and sponsor projects/programs of work across National Grid in order to ensure delivery of business objectives and regional regulatory expectations.

  • Identify and formulate strategic objectives and outsourcing strategy specific to Gas Project Management, in order to drive change and innovation within National Grid and achieve competitive contractor pricing while maintaining the highest quality work standards and construction practices.

  • Translate functional policy into processes and procedures that drive greater efficiencies for National Grid and ensure compliance with SHE/ regulatory standards / legislation / governance.

  • Focus on continuous improvement techniques to challenge existing processes and continuously seek ways to do things better in order to drive greater efficiencies for the business. Work with process owners and peer Directors to identify and implement business process improvement and best practices enterprise wide in a consistent manner throughout the business; and remain abreast of changing technologies and industry best practices.

Knowledge & Experience Required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in an engineering discipline and/or significant relevant project management, engineering and construction experience in all aspects of utility construction and operations. MBA Preferred. PMP Certification desirable.

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience; prior experience in a large and complex project management capacity is required.

  • In-depth knowledge and experience in engineering and construction with thorough understanding of utility construction practices and operations.

  • Good understanding of National Grid’s operations and the regulatory environment influencing utility construction.

  • Experience of leading, inspiring and m otivating an operational team.

  • Demonstrates the ability to provide direction, the appropriate structure and effective resourcing to enable the team to deliver high performance.

  • In-depth knowledge and demonstrates deep understanding of the issues impacting the energy industry sector.

  • Has maintained a strong commitment to the SHES agenda through exemplary personal conduct and support of all reasonable precautions.

  • Experience in managing/directing and integrating the work of a project management unit.

  • Deep operational experience in utility project management

  • Experience of managing relationships with staff, contractors and members of the public and demonstrates the ability to build independent opinions of customer needs and design appropriate solutions.

Job Dimensions:

  • Manages a staff of 3 direct reports, 30 senior staff positions and significant outsourced project management contract workforce.

  • Opex budget of approx. $1.0mm and Capex accountability for design/build delivery of approx.. $300mm .
