Eversource Energy Lead Engineer, Reliability & Resiliency Planning in Manchester, New Hampshire

(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHmr45H8xZE)The System Reliability and Resiliency Planning Lead Engineer is responsible for the monitoring and analytics, strategic planning and development, and coordination of proposed plans, programs and projects with necessary stakeholders to support Eversource’s goal of providing continuous top-quartile performance. This position will lead the team in assessing distribution resiliency needs across the Company’s footprint and develop plans and programs to harden the system and reduce customer interruptions, interruption minutes and equipment damage during major and catastrophic storms, as well as during other man-made and natural major events that could disrupt electrical distribution service. The team will identify or develop analytics tools for rapid issues detection, monitor assets through an asset management system and condition health reporting and develop system improvement programs in a proactive manner. Data driven System Resiliency solutions and programs will be developed and justifications will be presented to critical stakeholders to generate and implement a structured annual long-term implementation plan. Performance measures to not only track the timely execution will be developed, but also the performance and cost benefits of the solutions and programs implemented will be quantified and measured.

The role requires active support in ongoing Regulatory proceedings, including rate cases. The candidate will help drive the necessary regulatory changes necessary for successful implementation of the Reliability and Resiliency Plans and push the associated metrics to meet and exceed performance goals and obligations for safe, reliability service to our customers.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises, coaches, and develops engineers and analysts; approves time and conducts performance reviews. Assigns, prioritizes and directs work performed by the team.
  • Leads the team to develop analytics tools for rapid issues detection, monitor assets through an asset management system and condition health reporting and develop system improvement programs in a proactive manner.
  • Leads development of new resiliency and reliability planning methods and the application of existing equipment, new technologies and innovative solutions including, but not limited to smart control and communication devices, aerial and spacer cables, upgraded poles, crossarms and hardware, enhanced tree trimming and vegetation management, targeted undergrounding, battery storage and other DER application, and other improvement measures.
  • Leads development of new data driven resiliency metrics adopting industry best practices and drives necessary regulatory changes to ensure successful implementation in applicable regulatory proceedings.
  • Leads a team of engineers and data analysts to produce state-of-the-art analyses that enable prudent, proactive, responsive data-driven resiliency planning measures, including requirements for docket 17-12-03RE08 in CT - PURA Investigation into Distribution System Planning of the Electric Distribution Companies – Resilience and Reliability Standards and Programs
  • Leads development of data, processes, and standards to enable better technical, regulatory, and financial resiliency planning decisions
  • Leads Distribution Asset Management, including supporting the development of tools and processes.
  • Supports the analysis and tracking of distribution and substation equipment failure reports, performance of additional investigation and testing as necessary, and implementation of necessary corrective measures; supports the coordination of these activities with the engineering, field operations, procurement, material management functions and others; and provides records and statistical reports in support of these activities.
  • Works closely and across multiple departments to ensure resiliency plans and programs are vetted, socialized, and accepted, and that any external communication with respect to resiliency represents the Company’s position accurately.
  • Leads the transition to analysis-based system resiliency planning using historical data, system models and predictive analytics to quantify costs and benefits of resiliency measures and justify prudent application.
  • Works with Rates and Revenue personnel to develop bill impact estimates for resiliency programs.
  • Works with Modeling Team to incorporate resiliency improvements in multi-year distribution (Synergi) models maintained by System Planning.
  • Works with Grid Mod, IT, and vendors to identify tools and processes to improve resiliency planning and analysis and procure training as needed for Resiliency Planning engineers
  • Supports regulatory testimony, expert testimony and rate case support for all jurisdictions as needed.
  • Develops RFPs and procures services and technology as needed for resiliency planning needs.
  • Serves during emergency restoration efforts.
  • Assumes the role of the Manager as required.

Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skill:

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and attention-to-detail.
  • Working knowledge of standard office computer software (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).

Education:

  • Requires a BS in Electrical Engineering; Master of Science Preferred.

Experience :

  • Eight (8) years in the technical, operational, or engineering aspects of the electrical utility industry.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
