We are currently recruiting for a  Sr. Engineer - Standards in our Madison, WI or Cedar Rapids, IA office.  This position plays a key role in proving regulatory compliance and technical guidance as it relates to the construction, maintenance, and operation of natural gas distribution systems. This position operates as a resource that understands the intent and application of applicable rules set by various regulatory bodies (i.e. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), OSHA, State Regulatory Commissions, DNR, etc.) an ensures familiarity with applicable codes and standards associated with assigned processes. This position works closely with management, engineering, and field operations groups, providing training to these various internal groups when required.

This is a hybrid-remote position reporting to the Madison, WI or Cedar Rapids, IA office. Candidates must reside in Wisconsin or Iowa. This position requires occasional travel throughout our service territory in Wisconsin and Iowa. Travel consists of primarily day trips.

What you will do

  • Develops practices and standards to provide for safe design and operation of transmission and distribution systems. Proactively elicits input on customer needs and expectations and proposes solutions. Is proactively involved in the identification and solution of problems falling within assigned area of responsibility.

  • Maintains an awareness of customer needs and expectations and proposes solutions.

  • Goes beyond generally accepted guidelines to analyze problems and recommend possible solutions. Solves complex problems by identifying new ways of using existing procedures, techniques, and resources.

  • Applies regulatory and organizational engineering standards; makes recommendations for changing processes and procedures.

  • Consistently demonstrates critical thinking skills necessary to develop recommendations which provide technically sound and the most cost-effective solutions, understanding the application to other problems.

  • Demonstrates the ability and confidence to present alternatives and constructively influence the customer's decision making.

  • Makes higher risk decisions that involve direct application of technical knowledge and may have an impact on multiple areas of the business with proper sign off from customer.

  • Makes positive, supportive contributions on teams that deal with complex technical or operational problems.

  • Develops strong working relationships with employees, vendors, customers, functional groups, and internal and external peers.

  • Explains complex technical problems to internal stakeholders and accurately prepares detailed documents such as technical studies and project documentation for future reference.

  • Demonstrates strong working knowledge of property unit catalog and understands the difference between capital and maintenance projects in accordance with the property unit catalog.

  • Proactively provides guidance to less experienced personnel and may mentor new employees or interns.

  • Engages in other duties as needed that support Alliant Energy’s Values and helps deliver on our Purpose to serve customers and build stronger communities.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree within an engineering program that is accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission Required

Required Experience

  • 7 years of related experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Project management leadership experience preferred, along with ability to deal with subcontractors and cross-functional teams; may have expertise in a particular area of the discipline.

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to use computer software programs (e.g., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management).

  • Ability to work in a diverse work environment.
