MGE is seeking an experienced Electrical Power Systems Engineer specializing in grid edge projects to join our Energy Products and Services area. The Grid Edge Technology Engineer will work across the utility to research, evaluate, design, build, and maintain the latest grid edge technologies and devices. The MGE Energy Products and Services group provides innovative solutions for MGE customers. MGE is committed to renewable energy resources. Due in part to MGE’s dedication to carbon reduction, the Madison area has been leading the Midwest in promoting electric vehicles. The Grid Edge Technology Engineer will be an integral part of MGE's innovative Energy Products and Services group.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Research, implement, and manage utility grid edge projects. Evaluate how to effectively integrate distributed energy resource technologies, including solar, energy storage, microgrids, and electric vehicles into the grid.
Help to develop a smart grid development and deployment strategy for MGE.
Plan and implement new and innovate ways to deploy and operate grid edge devices to manage customer load to provide a reliable and resilient power grid.
Provide technical expertise for business and residential customer programs, such as Shared Solar, Energy Storage, Demand Response, and Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure.
Identify engineering solutions and serve as a subject matter expert for distribution automation, transmission and distribution (T&D) system data and analytics, and utility communications systems.
Coordinate internal and external resources to ensure timely implementation of grid edge projects that support the company’s renewable business plans.
Communicate project objectives and milestones effectively to internal and external stakeholders.
Education and Experience
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, or similar field.
At least 7 years of progressively responsible, complex, or visible electrical power systems engineering experience.
Project management experience and demonstrated ability coordinating the efforts of multi-discipline, multi-agency project teams to complete work.
Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Wisconsin preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of and strong interest in the emerging electric utility technologies (renewable energy sources, energy storage, customer energy management, and grid optimization).
Exceptional customer service and communication skills with the ability to translate complex information for nontechnical audiences.
Detailed understanding of generation, distribution, and customer electrical systems.
Knowledge of how customer loads interface and impact the electric distribution system.
Knowledge of and strong interest in modern communication systems (e.g., Internet control protocols, Utility SCADA protocols, Spread Spectrum Radio, Cellular Technology, Optical Fiber, etc.).
Basic understanding of Energy Conversion (i.e. inverters and power supplies).
Experience implementing distribution level protection and control systems.
Experience implementing demand response or load management programs.
Understand utility regulatory process including rate design.
Strong interpersonal skills with experience leading teams consisting of members not under their direct supervision.
