DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages both capital and operations and maintenance projects at MGE power generation facilities.

  • Works with both internal and external entities to acquire project scope, schedule, and budget information during project development and project implementation.

  • Develops and performs various tests designed to accurately acquire specific data on power plant equipment. Analyzes test results, submits reports detailing the results, and makes recommendations for internal review and approval.

  • Prepares plans and procedures for conducting power plant equipment tests that are comprehensive and understood and agreed to by all concerned within the plant and which include proper consideration of power generation demands existent upon the facility, including the number and competency of personnel directly involved, plant and personnel safety, and notification to key personnel in related units which may be affected during test conductance.

  • Provides troubleshooting skills and techniques needed to pinpoint and correct operating problems encountered with plant equipment as well as technical expertise required for solutions to equipment maintenance problems.

  • Submits and recommends special needs and proposed projects which may be incorporated into the department's annual capital and operations and maintenance budgets.

  • Provides technical supervision during the installation of new power plant equipment and assists in troubleshooting the new equipment during its start-up and commissioning period. Assists with the development and submission of approval for standard operating procedures and training programs applicable to that equipment.

  • Acquires pertinent data from power plant operating logs and analyzes the data to provide insight into causes for particular operating problems.

  • Conducts tours of Blount Generating Station and West Campus Cogeneration Facility for various schools and utility groups.

  • Assumes and conducts duties and responsibilities of the Facility Response Coordinator for spill prevention, countermeasure, and control including coordination of training, inspections and testing, and recordkeeping.

  • Provides on-call support on nights and weekends in seven-week rotations with other staff personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university.

  • Three to ten years of power generation experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Working knowledge of power plant cycles and equipment including boilers, steam turbines, combustion turbines, generators, pumps, valves, steam systems, compressed air, etc.

  • Familiarity with various plant fuels and their characteristics and an understanding of calculations of efficiency and heat rates.

  • Working knowledge of control and instrumentation systems.

  • Basic understanding of electric production plant electrical systems including auxiliary electrical circuits, breakers, relays, transformers, and electric controls.

  • Familiarity with the skills and techniques of supervision, particularly as they apply to planning, organizing, and controlling the project activities.

  • Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written form.

  • Human relations skills necessary to ensure clear communication channels with supervisors, subordinates, and peers and ensure cooperative relationships both internally and with outside vendors.
