We are currently recruiting for a System Protection Engineer reporting to our Madison, WI office. You will join a team of experienced professionals with a time-honored culture of teaching the technical skills necessary to be a successful and knowledgeable engineer in this exciting branch of power delivery. You will use these skills to interconnect all forms of energy including solar, wind, and battery. With the use of a system protection laboratory, you will gain experience with a wide range of protection relays, meters, and SCADA equipment to test settings and schemes using Doble Power System Simulator.

This position will require an estimate of 20% travel throughout our service territory in Wisconsin, consisting of primarily day trips, with occasional overnight travel expected.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Apply knowledge of symmetrical components to design and program protective relay settings for the electric power grid.

  • Develop the relay, automation, metering, and control schemes at power generating stations and distribution substations.

  • Perform short circuit fault calculations and analyze protection coordination using CAPE software.

  • Gain familiarity with substation communication protocols such as TCP/IP, IEC 61850, DNP, and Modbus through design of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.

  • Build troubleshooting skills by supporting operational testing and commissioning activities with field personnel.

  • Learn what it takes to operate a safe and reliable electric power grid, through participation in real-world system event analysis discussions and by ensuring relay settings comply with all NERC reliability standards.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university through the Engineering Accreditation Commission. Electrical Engineering degree with power emphasis is preferred.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous technical and/or professional experience.

  • An internship or co-op in engineering is preferred.

  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.

  • Familiarity with AC/DC fundamentals, including three-phase power.

  • Basic understanding of fault current analysis, relay protection, and substation design.

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to use computer software programs (e.g., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management).

  • Ability to work in a diverse work environment.
