Job Description:

  • Framatome is seeking a Radiological Specialist for our ALARA and Safety Operational Support group located in Lynchburg, VA. *

ALARA and Safety operational support for the Installed Base America (IB-A) business unit who provides a full scope of outage related service activities for commercial nuclear reactors in the U.S. and world markets. IB-A outage related activities includes, but is not limited to, Steam Generator Services (SGS), Component Repair and Replacement (CR&R), Outage Nuclear Services (ONS), Refueling, Eddy Current, Non-destructive Examinations (NDE), and assembly, and disassembly.

  • Responsibilities and duties include: *

Under close to minimal supervision:

  • Works with internal customers (Task Leaders) and external customers (Utility personnel) to determine dose estimates for Framatome’s work activities at commercial reactor sites and other nuclear installations.

  • Works with Task Leaders and Utility personnel to develop ALARA plans for scheduled activities, defining and incorporating dose savings.

  • Reviews post outage reports along with lessons learned and recommends and /or implements measures for exposure savings for future tasks.

  • Participates in design reviews for new tooling and tasks to interject ALARA and safety philosophies

  • Deploys to nuclear facilities to perform duties as an ALARA Engineer including but not limited to:

  1. Performs oversight of company outage work activities while pursuing reduction in exposure

  2. Documents exposure performance with comparison of estimated versus actual dose

  3. Serves as a liaison between company management and customer Radiation Protection representatives

  4. Controls individual dose in accordance with Framatome and customer policies

  5. Serves in an occupational safety professional role

  • May develop safety plans for upcoming work campaigns for maintenance activities performed at customer sites

  • May intermittently augment Radiation Protection staff needs at Framatome’s licensed MAR facility

  • May intermittently perform in a safety role at the Framatome MRR and/or MAR facilities

All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this opportunity. Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position.

  • B.S. in Physics or related discipline highly preferred, plus 2 years additional exp. in radiation protection or health physics or 5 years of related professional experience in lieu of degree.

  • 5 years’ experience in Radiation Protection / ALARA discipline, ANSI / ANS 3.1-1987.

The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position:

  • Previous commercial nuclear reactor ALARA and Radiation Protection experience

  • National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT) certification (active or inactive)

  • American Board of Health Physics (ABH 1 and/or ABH 1&2)

  • Degree in Radiation Protection, Health Physics, or similar discipline

  • Safety professional experience with certifications such as OHSA 510 or 511

  • Knowledgeable of NRC and OHSA regulations

  • Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft suites, modelling software such as MicroShield

  • Strong communication abilities such as presenting presentations, conducting training, etc.

TRAVEL: Travel typically 2 to 3 times per year at typically 6 week increments and sometimes may include international deployments.
