Lynchburg Thermal-Hydraulics Department:
The Lynchburg Thermal-Hydraulics team (FDT-AL) directly supports the reactor core design needs for US Region Light Water Reactor PWR commercial operation. The team provides the leading support and co-ordination for reactor core fuel design, licensing, safety analysis, and methods development required to support commercial PWR reactor design. The team performs a full range of thermal-hydraulic and safety analysis of the commercial fuel and core design. Engineers are involved in establishing thermal-hydraulic safety criteria, including evaluation of critical heat flux during normal operation and transient events; developing thermal-hydraulic code requirements and methods to support the fuel analyses; coordinating thermal-hydraulic testing of new fuel designs; performing thermal-hydraulic analysis of the reactor core to support mechanical analyses, safety analyses and plant operations; participating in reactor licensing and regulatory issue resolution. Lynchburg Thermal-Hydraulics represents an international design team within the Framatome corporate team.
Lynchburg Thermal-Hydraulic engineers are involved in establishing safety criteria, including evaluation of critical heat flux and fuel centerline temperatures during normal operation and transient events; evaluating hydraulic characteristics for the reactor core and fuel; evaluating complex protection system set points; performing loss of cooling accident analyses; performing containment pressure limit analyses; performing the thermal-hydraulic analyses to support NUREG-0800 licensing efforts for all reload and plant safety analyses; maintaining existing T-H codes and methodologies as well as developing new codes and methods; evaluating and developing solutions to emerging T-H issues on operating plants; and participating in reactor licensing and regulatory issue resolution. This work supports a variety of plant and fuel designs including Westinghouse 3&4 loop, CE, and B&W designs.
Framatome is seeking a Thermal Hydraulic Engineer II-IV for our Lynchburg, VA location.
Eng. II: Under general supervision, performs varied and more difficult engineering tasks requiring application of established techniques and procedures. Assignments involve responsibility for planning/conducting a complete task or portion of a larger project under direction of more experienced staff. Provides technical support related to planning, designing, analysing, constructing and maintaining structures, systems and components. Provides engineering advice, as needed.
Eng. III: Under general supervision, performs broad, complex engineering assignments requiring originality, ingenuity and the development of new methods. Provides advanced technical support related to planning, designing, analyzing, constructing and maintaining structures, systems and components. Provides engineering advice as needed and displays technical competence requiring minimal direction from higher level engineering staff.
Eng. IV: Under broad supervision, performs more complex engineering assignments requiring originality, ingenuity and the development of new methods or resolution of conflicting objectives. Provides advanced technical support and guides and reviews the work of other team members. Reviews progress and updates management, as needed.
*Responsibilities and duties include : *
Perform design and safety analyses to support the design of Framatome fuel for commercial light water reactors.
Conduct analyses involving the use of engineering computer codes to assess thermal hydraulic performance, pressure drop, and transient analyses to demonstrate that licensing requirements are satisfied.
Interface with Framatome European counterparts to support Light Water Reactor projects.
Participate in and support interface with regulatory authorities and design services customers to obtain regulatory approval of the Framatome reactor core design and methods.
Analyses are performed to support core design and licensing, assess proposed changes in fuel designs or operating strategies, evaluate changes in analytical methods, and support reactor functional design specifications and requirements.

Engineer II - BS in Nuclear Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, or comparable engineering degree PLUS 2-3 years of directly related thermal-hydraulics design engineering experience. An advanced engineering degree may be substituted for related work experience (MS 1 yrs. or PhD 2 yrs.).
Engineer III - BS in Nuclear Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, or comparable engineering degree PLUS 3-5 years of directly related thermal-hydraulics design engineering experience. An advanced engineering degree may be substituted for related work experience (MS 1 yrs. or PhD 2 yrs.).
Engineer IV - BS in Nuclear Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, or comparable engineering degree PLUS 5-7 years of directly related thermal-hydraulics design engineering experience. An advanced engineering degree may be substituted for related work experience (MS 1 yrs. or PhD 2 yrs.).
Possess good verbal and written communication skills and a pro-active approach to problem identification and resolution.
Fundamental computer skills (Word, Excel).
Ability and attitude to learn a variety of new procedures, processes, and tools, while maintaining various stages of production.
Ability to work well in a fast-paced atmosphere.
Ability to work in a team environment, communicate effectively, and take initiative to meet customer requirements.
The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position. *
Advanced degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering.
Knowledge of various programming languages such as FORTRAN, PYTHON, and C in a LINUX/UNIX operating system.
Experience with core thermal-hydraulic simulator codes such as XCOBRA, LYNXT, VIPRE or COBRA-FLX.
Experience with fuel performance codes such as COPERNIC, TACO3, or RODEX2.
Experience with core neutronic simulator codes such as ARTEMIS, PRISM, NEMO, SCIENCE or SIMULATE.
Experience with systems analyses codes such as RELAP or TRACE.
Experience with containment analysis code GOTHIC
Experience with licensing interactions with the NRC and ACRS.
French or German language skills
