Overview

The Operations and Maintenance Technicians are responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of combustion and steam turbine generators, heat recovery steam generators, and auxiliary equipment.

Responsibilities

GENERAL DUTIES

  • The normal duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Employee will be knowledgeable of and follow all safety rules, procedures and practices.

  • Employee will, when directed by supervision, report to assigned locations for the purpose of receiving training and will actively participate in the training activities.

  • Employee will carry out assignments in training for and/or performing fire fighting and first aid.

  • Employee will exhibit an adequate competency level pertaining to activities delineated in the Duties and Qualifications sections of this job classification. Demonstrate such competency via performance of job duties and training and testing programs administered at intervals prescribed by Louisville Gas and Electric to assure correct classification of employees.

  • Employee will, during the normal performance of his duties, watch for and promptly report to supervision any damaged or defective equipment or conditions which may cause damage or injury.

  • Employee will perform such other duties as directed by the Supervisor that are necessary to Company operation and are within his/her capabilities.

  • Employee will keep all equipment, tools, materials and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.

  • Employee will report as directed to any facility where needed.

  • Employee will perform work in a responsible and cooperative manner to facilitate a positive working environment.

  • Employee will compile information and generate reports, forms and documents as required.

  • Employee will represent the Company to the community with attention to the highest standard of conduct, appearance and attitude.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Employee will perform simple repair work requiring an entry-level degree of skill to work with the following:

  • Assist with Combustion/steam turbine instrument, electrical and mechanical maintenance including calibration/testing, installation, troubleshooting, repairs, preventive maintenance on all plant equipment including process control equipment, generators, motors, pumps, batteries, transformers, regulators, valves, circuit breakers, switches, instrumentation, control relays, and additional auxiliary equipment.

  • Assist in monitoring and inspecting all plant equipment including combustion/steam turbines, generators, boilers/heat recovery steam generators, transformers, pumps, condensers, switchyard and related auxiliary equipment.

  • Assist with performing predictive and preventive maintenance work by inspecting, monitoring, lubricating, troubleshooting and testing plant equipment.

  • Assist with performing controls maintenance including calibration, testing, troubleshooting and repairs.

  • Assist in start up and shut down of plant equipment including monitoring and operating plant and responding to events and emergencies.

  • Monitor, inspect and make necessary repairs on all plant equipment including gas/steam turbines, generators, boilers, transformers, pumps, condensers, switchyard and related equipment.

  • Assist in operating controls and devices for proper plant operation. Coordinate unit operation with Generation Dispatch and Transmission Operations as required.

  • Monitor and respond to alarms and unusual conditions to ensure proper operation of equipment within established standards, and report irregular and abnormal operating conditions to supervision.

  • Isolate plant equipment in accordance with LG&E Lockout/Tagout Procedure.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, federal laws and regulations and with Company policies, procedures, standards, and specifications.

  • Assist in performing mechanical, electronic and instrumentation work including dismantling, rebuilding, and adjusting, aligning, packing and cleaning equipment.

  • Monitor and analyze operational and predictive maintenance indicators and initiate appropriate action.

  • Maintain and monitor boiler water chemistry and other plant cycle chemistry by reviewing operational data and collecting and analyzing samples. Maintain and operate water treatment plants.

  • Employee will make rounds, observing temperatures, pressures, and operating conditions, recording the required readings and reporting abnormal conditions to the supervisor.

  • Employee will check operation of generators, motors, pumps, and all other auxiliary equipment reporting irregularities to the supervisor.

  • Employee will operate and test emergency and backup equipment as required.

  • Employee will grease, oil, clean and paint the equipment and/or operating areas as needed or assigned.

  • Employee will perform in a maintenance capacity and other functions as necessary to maintain efficient plant operations.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY INTO:

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Employee must meet all general qualifications of employment.

  • Employee must be able to speak, understand, read and write English, and be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

  • Employee must be able to learn to use the tools and equipment required in the work.

  • Employee must be thoroughly familiar with the Company Safety Rules and willingly see that they are enforced.

  • Employee must have a valid state driver’s license and pass the Transportation Department’s driver’s test for operating Company vehicles, including those with a manual transmission.

  • Employee must be willing to work inside and outside under varying weather conditions.

  • Employee must be willing to report as directed to any facility on any shift where needed.

  • Employee must be in good health and be able to perform the physical requirements of the job, which include heavy manual labor.

  • Employee must be willing and able to communicate through both verbal and written reports.

  • Employee must be able to learn to make and read simple drawings and sketches.

  • Employee must have demonstrated ability to carry through work assignments, and conduct himself/herself in a manner that encourages cooperation and satisfactory work from others assigned to work with him/her.

  • Employee must be rated qualified for entry into this classification under the Louisville Gas and Electric Company's Employee Performance Review Program and have satisfactorily completed all applicable training and testing programs.

  • Employee must successfully complete such entry level testing programs as are promulgated by Louisville Gas and Electric to measure job responsive aptitude, ability to retain knowledge and problem solving skills.

Remote Work
