Job Description:

Manages development and execution of the organizational structure, resource plans, business plans, and tactical road maps which assure continued and effective operation of high voltage electric substations in alignment with current and projected system and customer needs. Manages development and approval of short and long-term capital and expense budgets for areas of responsibility. Leads short and long-range strategic planning and influences business processes, performance metrics, controls, and organizational structure which ensure performance targets and department objectives are achieved. Manages labor, materials, equipment, and other essential resources towards safe, efficient, and effective construction, maintenance, and repair of electric substation assets, properties, and supporting equipment and technologies. Leads development and administration of compliance and technical skills training which assures adequately qualified personnel are available to safely perform necessary design, engineering, construction, operations, maintenance and repairs activities.Oversees engineering and project management for major capital investment projects. Ensures projects are managed to the approved scope, schedule, and budget.Leads substation asset investment and maintenance strategies for Distribution Substations. Works with staff to monitor equipment failure trends and complete root cause analysis for significant events with the purpose of developing strategies to mitigate risks. This includes making recommendations for capital replacement plans to address equipment with high failure rates that cannot be cost-effectively maintained.Manages preventative, corrective, and emergency maintenance plans for Distribution, Transmission, and Generation Substations. Leads development of substation standards and specifications and operating procedures which assure compliance with applicable regulatory standards and safety codes. Oversees development of contract scopes and specifications for equipment, materials, and engineering, construction, and procurement services. Oversees bid evaluations and contract awards. Leads identification and implementation of improvement opportunities and/or suggests improved methods, including substation design and construction standards, equipment specifications, and work methods.Manages short and long-term contingency, reliability, and emergency planning. Leads and manages cross-functional work groups during major system restoration efforts.Directs spare equipment strategies for responsibility areas to ensure timely service restoration when problems occur on the system.Leads engineering, design, and project support for new technologies involving substations.Represents responsibility areas in various regulatory and legal proceedings as required.Leads assessment and assignment of growth and development opportunities for staff.Provides construction and maintenance services to Transmission and Generation Businesses as required.Works with staff to implement and maintain effective preventative maintenance schedules and reporting mechanisms that include the tracking and trending of pertinent asset data.Performs other duties as directed by Senior Manager.

Preferred Qualifications:

Substation engineering and design experience, Master of Engineering and/or Professional Engineering is preferred.Demonstrated ability to manage projects and employee performance. Engineering working knowledge of power transformers, power circuit breakers, protection equipment, instrumentation, physical components, and other substation equipment. In-depth understanding of substation operation, testing, construction, and maintenance. Ability to analyze and solve engineering problems from both a technical and business perspective. Excellent interpersonal and team building skills. Effective planning, organizing, and both written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated leadership abilities. High level of proficiency in the use of computers and software including word processing, spreadsheets, database management, reporting tools, Substation Engineering and Design software systems, and corporate information systems.

Work Conditions:

Primarily office environment but makes routine trips to energized electrical substations. Routine statewide travel across KU and LG&E service area, some overnight travel required.

Required Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a minimum of 8 years job-related industry experience in engineering or construction discipline required. Must have strong leadership, project management and interpersonal skills. Must have strong decision-making skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
