AES Project Engineer, Solar in Louisville, Colorado

The Project Engineer will be responsible for Distribution Generation scale solar PV and battery storage projects in late-stage development, detailed design, construction and commissioning phases. Responsibilities include production analysis, energy models for solar and energy storage, electrical, civil and structural design review, managing Request for Information, Scope of Work and Requests for Proposal for engineering services, field construction quality control, field punch list development and development of commissioning and performance testing plans.

The Project Engineer will join the DG Execution Project Engineering team and serve as the single point-of-contact for technical and engineering matters for all assigned projects. Excellent communication, task management and planning skills needed, in addition to technical breadth.

The successful candidate will have a depth of experience in the design, engineering and analysis of solar PV and energy storage ranging from 2 to 5 MW as well as an in-depth understanding of the architectures and components to build such systems.

The position can be remote or located in Louisville, CO, with preference to candidates who can be in-person at the AES’s Louisville office several day a week. The responsibilities will include up to 25% travel to project locations.

Key Responsibilities

Project Execution

Project Scope of Work and design standards development.

Seek and evaluate proposals for engineering services.

Coordinate engineering consultants to develop project construction drawings and support material. Ensure that project design adheres to AES CE’s design standard.

Review and comment on design work you're doing provided by consultants and contractors for the construction of projects.

Respond to contractor RFIs during course of construction.

Perform project site visit during the construction phase of the projects. Perform QA/QC field inspections and punch list development and follow-up.

Perform Job Safety Assessments and Safety Walks to identify job-site hazards.

Review commissioning reports and analyze system performance.

Support budget development and key financial inputs.

Prepare and support project turnover to O&M/Asset Management team.

Support the technical due diligence for project financing.

Act as the technical POC working closely with EPC and Engineering Design firms.

Support and coordinate Utility’s technical engineering needs for and during project construction and commissioning.

Project Development

Technical project due diligence and project engineering design review.

Equipment review and selection.

Engineering Procurement and Construction contract support.

Assessment of energy production and performance modeling for PV and energy storage systems.

Assessment of model accuracy including meteorological assessment and P-50/P-90 analysis.

Engineering Support

Review recent technology and companies for Approved Vendor List inclusion.

Design optimization to value engineer, improve reliability and performance, and reduce cost.

Collaborate with Asset Management team to fix existing systems or develop repair and remediation plans.

Growth and Leadership

Improve and develop processes for the execution of safe, quality and high-performance projects.

Mentor and educate team on changing trends in technology, standard methodologies and safety.

Review the work of junior engineering team members and provide constructive feedback for improvement, and mentorship.

Participate in AES CE’s growth planning process by contributing to process improvement task forces and other planning activities.

Skills and Qualifications

Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience in Engineering or equivalent technical field

5+ years professional experience in solar PV system design, development, construction and analysis

Initial experience with energy storage systems design and modeling

Strong knowledge of major equipment in solar and BESS plants to include PV modules, central and string inverters, fixed tilt racking and trackers

Proficiency in real-world PV system design, including 1-line and 3-line diagram conventions, NEC conductor sizing, overcurrent protection sizing, utility disconnecting means requirements, equipment selection, grounding methodologies and short circuit current analysis

Experience with medium voltage and high voltage interconnection design including transformer specifications, pad mounted switchgear and pole mounted equipment

Comfort with NEC code, as well as related codes such as IBC, NFPA 855, and NESC.

Strong proficiency with AutoCAD, PVsyst, and Microsoft Excel

Plus Qualifications

  • Graduate degree or equivalent experience in Engineering

  • EIT or PE qualifications

  • Experience with Matlab, ETAP, SKM and other advanced modeling tools

  • Substation/HV design experience

  • NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification

  • Spanish language skills

  • OSHA 10-hr or comparable job-sit

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $90.000 and $110.500/Annual; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered.
