ElectriCities of North Carolina Electric Line Crew Leader in Lexington, North Carolina


The City of Lexington Regions Operations Division of ElectriCities operates and maintains the City of Lexington’s electric systems in a safe, efficient, reliable and economical manner as contracted for in the Operating Agreement with the City of Lexington. This includes managing/administering the Operating Agreement and other contracts/agreements as necessary for the operation and maintenance of the Cities Electric Systems. The ElectriCities Operations Center located in the City of Lexington and is the reporting location for all of the Electric division’s employees assigned to Lexington.


Works with and provides direction, supervision, and leadership to electric crews involved the construction, operations and maintenance of the transmission and distribution system for the City of Lexington within their service territory.

Ensures all assigned employees follow all of ElectriCities policies, procedures, and all safety rules (OSHA & APPA Safety Manual) and regulations.

Responsible for supervising, training, leading and participating in the activities of a group of skilled crewmen engaged in the construction, maintenance and repair of the electric distribution systems and the operation of the electric system.

Makes assignments, directs and leads crewmen in installing repairing and replacing cross arms, poles, guy cables, insulators, lightning arrestors, circuit breakers, fuse cutouts and related equipment to furnish electrical power.

Directs and leads in the installation of transformers and transformer platforms, digging of pole holes and the erection and bracing of poles.

Supervises the installation and removal of commercial electric meters, installation and removal of temporary service lines, new and underground services and field maintenance of meters and adjuncts.

Monitors the installation of service and load management switches and voltage and amperage checks.

Demonstrates complete understanding of the tasks associated with the installation and maintenance of an electrical system, has the ability to plan, schedule, coordinate, and implement assignments accordingly. Works with supervision to prioritize workload, plan, schedule, and execute tasks efficiently and effectively.

Supervises and participates in maintenance of substations, streetlights, and traffic signals, ensures all tools, materials and equipment is maintained and cared for.

Supervises the installation of primary metering.

Enforces the application of safety precautions by all electrical personnel.

Supervises and participates in investigation of complaints regarding power failures and makes repairs or adjustment.

Supervises and participates in the installation of gang operated switches and single and three-phase re-closers.

Oversees contract crews to ensure quality work practices and performance.

Provides recommendations to management regarding "reasonable suspicion testing" as defined in the ECNC Drug Testing Policy, section IX.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Operations Management team in accordance with the goals and objectives of ElectriCities.

Adheres to the APPA Safety Manual.

Working Knowledge of OSHA 1910.296 and Knowledgeable with all High Voltage Safety & Practices involving Transmission & Distribution Crews involved in the Construction & Maintenance of an Electrical System


This position works under the general guidance of the Electric Operations Supervisor, who reviews the employee's work performance periodically in terms of overall effectiveness and provides professional guidance as necessary. Time sheets, vacation time, sick leave, etc., will be reviewed and approved by the Electric Operations Supervisor. This position is non-exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Working Conditions

Work involves light to heavy physical activity in varied weather conditions as well as a high degree of risk to personal safety with respect to power line work, high voltage areas and elevated work areas. Safe use of proper tools, uniforms, and other personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times. Participation in the on-call rotation is a requirement. Required to reside in a location that meets minimum response time requirements to outages and emergencies. Occasional support of neighboring municipal electric providers, mutual aid, or emergency assistance may be available/required.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. Occasionally the employee is required to sit; climb or balance electric poles; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally be able to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Vision requirements are close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


  • A high school diploma.

  • Demonstrated ability to use various Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook) and internal programs to track time, materials, and communicate within the organization.

  • Completion of advanced technical school training in the electrical or related field.

  • Completion of the Lineman Career Development Program offered by ElectriCities of North Carolina.

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program.

  • A minimum of two years of experience as a Power Line Technician III is required; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Journeyman certification.

  • Required to work a rotating on-call schedule.

  • Required to work planned and emergency overtime.

  • Required to respond/work emergency callouts from home as needed.

VII. Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license (CDL) – Class A

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug and/or alcohol screening.

  • Ability to pass random testing due to the CDL license requirement.

  • Ability to pass any and all drug and/or alcohol screenings. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
