Knowledgeable of and follow all Company safety rules, procedures and practices.
When directed by supervisor, will assist and/or direct the training of other employees in the correct operating procedures necessary to fully satisfy the classification duties of Meter Technician "B" and all lower classifications within the subject line of progression or other duties with which the employee is familiar.
When directed by supervision, will report to assigned locations for the purpose of receiving training and will actively participate in the training activities.
Exhibit an adequate competency level pertaining to activities accountabilities and qualification sections of this job classification. Demonstrate such competency via performance of job duties and training and testing programs administered at intervals prescribed by Kentucky Utilities to assure correct classification of employees.
Will perform duties of lower or higher classifications that are incidental to the job and are within his/her capabilities including those needed for the purpose of training in the requirements of the higher classifications.
Will perform all duties of the Meter Technician “B”.
Will learn to shop test, field test, install and repair single-phase and polyphase meters to include current transformer installations.
Learn to read commercial electric meters with and without demand attachments.
Will learn to make customer complaint inspections and check wiring for grounds.
Assist in keeping the meter shop clean, organized and the work area safe.
Will learn to be proficient in the installation and maintenance of high voltage (primary) meter installations.
Operate company vehicles in a safe and responsible manner and become familiar with the company service area.
Learn to install and maintain AMI meters including the communication portion of the meter.
Learn how to investigate and resolve meter communication problems with AMI meters.
Will, during the normal performance of assigned duties, watch for and promptly report to supervision any damaged or defective equipment or conditions which may cause damage or injury.
Keep all equipment, tools, materials and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
Represent the Company to the community with the attention to the highest standard of conduct, appearance and attitude and perform work in a responsible and cooperative manner to facilitate a positive work environment.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. from the ground to the height of 30 inches and from waist level to chest on a daily basis; Typical equipment/materials that must be lifted includes but is not limited to tools, materials, parts, current and potential transformers; Able to climb up and down stairs and vertical and inclined ladders unassisted on a daily basis; Frequently stoop, bend, push, pull etc.; Must be able to use hand and power tools; Perform hand manipulations extended from your body and near floor level for extended periods of time on a routine basis.
Computer proficiency preferred; Fluency in reading and speaking Spanish preferred; Must be willing and able to communicate through both verbal and written reports; Use the tools and equipment required in the work; Be able to make and read simple drawings and sketches and demonstrate the ability to carry through work assignments and conduct himself/herself in a manner that encourages cooperation and satisfactory work from others assigned to work with them.
Demonstrate willingness to work inside and outside in varying weather conditions. Exposure to heat, cold, wind, rain, etc., as well as exposure to animals, pets, loud noises and traffic. Frequent driving, climbing, and walking.
Required Education & Experience:
Must be a graduate of a two-year school having majored in electronics or comparable line of study where a working knowledge of arithmetic and simple algebra was acquired (trigonometry is a plus); met and be proficient in all qualifications for the Meter Assets Trainee position; Must have at least twelve (12) months experience as a Trainee or equivalent and successfully completed all the training and testing programs required in that qualification. Passed the examination and issued a certificate required for all Meter Technicians (i.e., current Meterman certification) by the Company. Know the electrical terms and apparatus associated with the Electric Meter Department and understand the technical operating characteristics of AMI meters. Demonstrate mechanical aptitude and the ability to learn the operation and construction of electric meters; Must be capable of acquiring a working knowledge in the field of electricity and become proficient in the installation and testing of measurement instruments and devices; Must have a valid state’s driving license and safe driving record; Must be in good health and able to perform the physical requirements of the job, which include heavy manual labor; Must possess the willingness and ability to acquire the necessary knowledge and skill to advance to higher classifications; Must be able to speak, understand, read and write English and be able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
