Department Summary

Consumers Energy Company’s Corporate Communications Department is a team of professionals who provide expert guidance and strategy on brand, external public relations and internal communications.

Consumers Energy Company’s Environmental Services Department is a team of professionals who provide planning, permitting, operational compliance, policy, and strategic support for electric and natural gas utility operations serving approximately 6 million customers in Michigan.

The Sustainability team within the Environmental Services Department is dedicated to improving the Company’s performance and disclosure around environmental, social and governance issues.

The Corporate Communications Department is seeking to fill a position in cooperation with the company’s Environmental Services’ Sustainability team. The successful candidate will join these teams who routinely collaborate with internal business partners, other Corporate Communications and Environmental Services staff and several external stakeholders to serve as the lead communications person for all things Sustainability.

Job Description / Responsibilities

This position will be filled by a candidate with a broad range of communications skillsets, including communications planning and project management, technical and creative writing, and public relations. The candidate will also have a solid understanding and passion for Sustainability principles and best practices. They will report through the Corporate Communications function and will be embedded in the Environmental Services department to support the agile approach to developing and fulfilling Sustainability communications strategies that will position the company as a clean energy leader. This role will manage several Sustainability-focused annual reports; draft copy for use on our website; lead the charge on applying for national sustainability awards; help promote sustainability initiatives through creative storytelling, earned/social media and brand activation ideas; support Annual Earth month efforts and activities for internal Sustainability initiatives.


  • Develop effective sustainability communications plans and written copy for a variety of company stakeholders, including shareowners, customers, community organizations and employees

  • Maintain updated creative for the Sustainability section of the Consumers Energy website

  • Advise on copy and provide creative guidance for the Sustainability section of the CMS Energy website

  • Produce Sustainability content and ideas for internal and external channel amplification

  • Manage the planning, submission and tracking of corporate Sustainability awards

  • Act as communications lead on the company’s annual Sustainability reporting initiatives

  • Support companywide sustainability initiatives with communications planning and execution, including the Green Teams, Earth Month, and other special projects

Requirements / Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or other applicable field

  • 2-5 years of relevant experience


  • Experience in Corporate Social Responsibility/Sustainability communications

The following skills may set you apart:

  • Ability to build strong, collaborative work relationships with business partners, team members, and leadership to build consensus, promote continuous improvement, and improve results.

  • Experience with sustainability reporting frameworks.

  • Experience in the utility industry, including knowledge of distribution and transmission systems, renewable energy development, and/or natural gas storage.

Hours and Travel This position requires the individual work 40 hours per week with about 95% of time spent in an office setting. Physical Demands This position will be performed in an office setting and does not require any special physical demands.

Position will be filled at the appropriate salary grade based upon the skills, knowledge, and experience of the selected candidate.
