Position Specific Description

The expansion of the transmission system will pave the way for a carbon-free future that allows renewables to be implemented in resource optimal locations and transported to load centers. In order to achieve this goal, significant amounts of new transmission infrastructure will need to be built. NextEra Energy Transmission (NEET) is the leading competitive transmission developer in the US and Canada to develop transmission solutions that enable this future.

The Principal, Transmission Planning Engineer for the Transmission Fundamentals team will be responsible for helping to identify and design new greenfield transmission solutions across the United States and Canada. This position is part of a team performing technical modeling and analysis to identify and evaluate latent opportunities on the transmission system. Successful candidates will have experience in transmission planning as well as developing novel analysis approaches or tools. This position will collaborate with other team members to build a software platform designed to look beyond the existing RTO/ISO planning processes to identify and evaluate the transmission needs of the future grid.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with colleagues to create new analysis tools and models to identify, design, and evaluate new transmission solutions, both within and beyond the current planning process horizons

• Contribute to developing new modeling capabilities, including both traditional as well as modeling that leverages artificial intelligence/machine learning techniques

• Identify enhancements to state-of-the-art tools to better identify optimal transmission opportunities from the analysis of a multitude of scenarios and sensitivities

• Collaborate with internal and external Subject Matter Experts to arrive at the most cost-effective and competitive transmission solutions

• Ensure compliance with applicable technical and regulatory requirements

• Performs other job-related duties as assigned

• 10% - 25% travel required

A success individual must possess:

• A power systems background including a thorough understand of transmission planning and NERC reliability standards

• Experience with common industry analytical tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, PowerGEM TARA, PROMOD, GRIDVIEW, ASPEN, UPLAN

• An understanding of the planning processes within utilities and RTOs/ISOs, including reliability and economic/broader benefit analyses

• An understanding of transmission policy and regulatory issues

• Ability to coordinate activities with multiple internal and external SMEs to drive the completion of a comprehensive set of transmission analyses to identify cost-effective and competitive transmission solutions

Ideally candidate will sit out of our office in either: Denver, CO; Austin, TX; or Juno Beach, FL. Other locations, including remote, may be considered for qualified candidates.

Job Overview

The Transmission Planning engineer will be responsible for conducting studies to ensure the reliability of the Bulk Electric System. This work includes power flow analysis, stability studies, voltage studies, technical analysis of disturbances, implementation of regulatory reliability standards, and coordination of reliability and economic studies with the Regional Transmission Operator. Other responsibilities include performing interconnection studies for generation and transmission service requests and providing technical support to the Transmission Operations Control Center. The Planning engineer will study the current and future transmission system configuration, recommend changes to transmission system facilities, perform economic analysis of alternatives, and assist with the preparation of the 10-year transmission expansion plans.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform power-flow, short-circuit, and stability studies of the transmission systems

  • Assess study results to identify future needs for system improvements

  • Perform studies required to ensure compliance with NERC Reliability Standards and Transmission Planning Criteria

  • Perform generator interconnection studies and identify system upgrades or additions

  • Represent utility interest in committees or working groups associated with NERC, and other industry groups

  • Work with design and engineering groups/consultants on required large Transmission Planning projects

  • Prepares communications, and presentations and provides support at meetings

  • Provide leadership to committees or groups as needed

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's - Engineering

  • Experience: 7+ years

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's - Engineering

  • Leadership Experience: 2+ years

  • Certified Professional Engineer (PE)

  • Six Sigma Green Belt Certified
