The Grid Management System Operation Support team is responsible for the development and maintenance of operating policies and procedures, management of a NERC compliance program, and the training and certification of System Controllers, Distribution Controllers and LVD Dispatchers. We support safe and excellent operations through an agile procedure process, extensive training using a performance-based model and ensuring compliance is part of daily business operations.
The System Operations Superintendent of Training will lead the training group as part of the Grid Management System Operation Support team. This group applies a comprehensive knowledge of electric system operations and applicable NERC standards to effectively train employees in Grid Management to become qualified System Operators as well as develop and implement continuing training programs for each position. The System Operations Superintendent is responsible for managing the training staff, operational and training records to ensure that all System Operators are trained in accordance with the NERC standards as well as other department policies and procedures.
Oversee the delivery training activities for the System Operations Training team.
As workload requires, the Training Superintendent must be able to perform the following:
Design, develop and implement virtual and classroom-based training activities.
Design and implement scenario and performance-based training activities.
Assess and observe the communications, switching orders and operational decisions of employees participating in initial and continuing training activities.
Serve as a subject matter expert for the development and reviews of Grid Management operating procedures.
Serve as requirement owner for several NERC standards and requirements. This includes writing and reviewing annual Reliability Standard Audit Worksheets (RSAWs) and providing evidence of compliance applicable to each standard and requirement.
Conduct Quarterly Operational meetings, annual job task reviews and annual training program reviews to ensure NERC compliance, alignment with real-time operations and applicable operating procedures.
Associates or Bachelors degree with a math/science emphasis or equivalent combination of education and experience.
7 or more years of transmission/distribution control center operations experience or a combination of control center operations and field leadership experience.
Demonstrated leadership skills through formal leadership roles or other opportunities to lead.
Ability to effectively interact with team members, students, external teams and leadership to foster an effective and positive learning environment.
Maintain skills and training to operate system as a support resource during storm or other emergency operations. If the candidate is not currently qualified, they must obtain the necessary skills and qualifications within 6 months.
Participate in the System Control Center/Distribution Control Center (SCC/DCC) statewide on-call rotation and provide support during storm events and/or system emergencies.
Ability to work and adapt in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience with Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, OneNote and SharePoint.
NERC certification at the Reliability Coordinator level.
Formal training experience using the ADDIE process to design, develop and implement training.
Training development experience using Microsoft PowerPoint or other tools for classroom or computer-based training.
CE Way/Lean experience and/or training.
Provide initial and continuing training programs for System Operators or Distribution Operators who monitor, control and support 24/7 operations of the Consumers Energy (CE) electric power system to meet power demands. System Operators are responsible for the reliability of CE’s transmission, high voltage distribution (HVD), and low voltage distribution (LVD) electric systems to include complying with all applicable NERC standards.
Provide training on the administration of switching and tagging on the CE transmission, HVD & LVD electric systems to ensure outages are executed in a safe, efficient and reliable manner as set forth by the policies, procedures and guidelines of CE, NERC, ITC, MIOSHA, MPSC, MISO and RFC.
In coordination with real-time operations leadership and the policies/procedures/compliance team, create and implement training plans in support of process, tool or NERC standard changes.
Identify and support the closing of performance gaps in new trainees or incumbent operators through training activities, one-on-one coaching sessions other supplemental training activities.
Ensure SCC training programs maintain compliance with applicable NERC Standards.
Complete annual and quarterly reporting activities required for compliance of NERC Standards applicable to training and System Operator certifications.
Oversee the administration of the NERC Continuing Education Program to ensure System Operators requiring NERC Certifications gain sufficient training hours needed to maintain their certifications.
Understand and follow company established standard procedures in order to complete work assignments.
Become familiar with business, department, and company procedures and related material for job assignments and be able to utilize the information appropriately.
Utilize effective communication skills to answer inquiries and give direction to coworkers and clients.

Hours and Travel
This position requires the individual work 40 hours per week with 100% of time spent in the office or specific field locations.
This position includes nights and weekend/holiday timeframes while on a rotating 24-hour shift.
