Job Summary

Reporting to the SVP of Corporate Strategy, this role is responsible for researching, analyzing, recommending, and leading innovation projects that keep Vistra at the forefront of emerging technologies to make our products and services more sustainable, reliable, and affordable

This role will be viewed as the hub of innovation work across the company and will be sought out for guidance for senior management on innovation priorities and progress

Job Description

Key Accountabilities

•Research and stay abreast of leading energy innovation technologies and practices as well as industry, competitor, and technology trends

•Develop and lead corporate innovation management process to coordinate and drive action on innovation activities across the company

•Manage relationships with Vistra’s VC partners. Bring external technology ideas and insights from VCs and their portfolio companies

•Identify and manage potential strategic alliances, partnerships, and other relationships that advance innovation objectives

•Develop and manage a bottoms-up innovation process to drive innovation culture at and generate innovation ideas from employees

•Evaluate ideas, perform financial analysis, and recommend projects, including preparing materials for senior management and the Board

•Coordinate with SMEs and develop projects until ready to hand off to Development and Construction

•Anticipate needs of the business with a strategic mindset, apply strategic frameworks to analyze problems and develop solutions

•Communicate complex innovation topics clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences through both written and oral communication

•Present results and recommendations to senior management and Board of Directors as requested

Play key role in annual strategic planning process

Education, Experience, & Skill Requirements

•Engineering/Business/Economics degree

•10+ years experience in the utility/IPP industry

•10+ years experience in corporate innovation/ venture capital/ corporate strategy or strategy consulting

•Demonstrated technical knowledge and judgment, creative problem solving and innovation, capability as a teacher and mentor, and leadership vision

•Ability to provide high-quality written and oral presentations to executives

•Ability to work cross-functionally, including building consensus and influencing decision making

•Experience gained through college degree programs and/or certifications is applicable to the above requirements

Key Metrics

•Number/size of new markets/opportunities identified and pursued by company

•Create executable roadmaps for innovation priorities aligned with Vistra’s strategic priorities

•Track and manage progress on innovation roadmaps

•Innovation projects originated, screened and executed

•Proactive management of spend for innovation budget

•Efficient and timely reporting of technology and market trends and Vistra’s POV on technologies

•Continuous coordination and collaboration with internal and external research and development team members, operations, retail, functional as well as engineering and commercial teams

•Create and foster an environment of continuous education and development for internal and external team members
