Become an Apprentice Substation Electrician at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you’ll be responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing high voltage electrical substation apparatus. This is a three-year apprenticeship program; candidates will be required to stay in the program for all three years.

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

  • Under the direction of the Supervisor, Journeyman, or other qualified person; installs, maintains and repairs high voltage electrical substation apparatus.

  • Utilizes various meters, testing, and diagnostic devices to perform routine testing and troubleshoots equipment problems.

  • Performs wiring of substation equipment; dismantles and overhauls circuit breakers, transformers, regulators and associated substation equipment.

  • Performs primary electrical switching, as directed by the switching center, to de-energize equipment for routine and emergency responses.

  • Maintains a safety conscious work environment by following Edison safety protocols and safe work practice.

  • Performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned.


The essentials

  • Possess a valid Class C motor vehicle operator’s license.

  • Ability to obtain a Class A motor vehicle operator's license within 6 months of appointment.

The preferred

  • Interpreting and following through with complex oral and written instructions.

  • Troubleshooting electrical AC and DC circuits and basic mechanical principals.

  • Utilizing hand tools and handheld power tools.

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

  • Experience as an apprentice or training to advance to a Journeyman Electrician.

  • Use basic computer programs that relate to installing and maintaining substation equipment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics or an electrical certification.

  • Experience with substations or electrical utility industry.

  • Two or more years of experience as an electrician with commercial, industrial, or residential installation.

  • Position will require up to 20% traveland working out in the field throughout the SCEservice territory.


  • This position requires testing and applicants who are identified to continue through the selection process will be invited to test via email. Forinformation guides ( , please reference tests: (EEI CAST Test #5108); (Apprentice Electrician Test #2100); (Substation Electrician Physical Performance Test #4022). Candidates who have previously passed these assessment(s), in some cases, may not need to retest again for this position. Testing will occur in Rosemead, CA and Alhambra, CA.
