AES Senior Engineer – Hydrogen Innovation in Indianapolis, Indiana

The Senior Engineer, Hydrogen Innovation will be a core member of the hydrogen innovation team responsible for redefining the future of hydrogen. You will be on the forefront of developing a differentiated green hydrogen product at AES by participating in all phases of technology development, including ideation, R&D, pilot scale validation, scale up and operations.

A successful candidate will act as a subject matter expert on water electrolysis technologies and the integration of electrolyzers into a broader green hydrogen production system. You will have a strong technical background and broad experience developing and scaling new technologies.

Your core responsibility will be to co-develop the next generation of integrated green hydrogen production systems with equipment supplier partners. You will generate strategic insights that guide technology development by evaluating the design of the existing technologies and challenging core design assumptions. You will design test campaigns to validate your insights and confirm economic viability through technoeconomic analysis.

What you’ll do

  • Monitor and evaluate the green hydrogen technology landscape

  • Leverage a deep understanding of electrolysis technologies to generate strategic insights about optimal deployment scenarios

  • Research, analyze, and develop innovative process models that integrate and optimize the operation of renewable generation assets with water electrolysis technologies

  • Collaborate with other relevant subject matter experts to conceptualize and validate integrated equipment configurations

  • Develop capital cost estimation models and cost forecasts for integrated green hydrogen facilities to enable cost-benefit analyses and capex/opex trade-offs for optimized configurations

  • Collaborate with the Hydrogen Innovation Project Manager to develop and execute AES’ Hydrogen Technology roadmap

  • Conceptualize novel technology innovations and design testing campaigns to validate innovations

  • Analyze operating data to generate core insights that enable validation of new product features

  • Define technical features for validated technologies for deployment in AES’ commercial project portfolio

Qualifications

  • Founder’s mentality : Entrepreneurial passion for getting things done and a “make it happen”attitude with an intellectual curiosity. You will question assumptions to generate insights and create novel solutions that overcome unexpected challenges.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical engineering or related area. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Experience : A minimum of 10 years of work experience in a field that utilizes electrochemical devices.

  • Expertise: Deep familiarity with leading water electrolysis plant technologies (PEM, Alkaline, AEM and corresponding balance-of-plant subsystems) or fuel cells and process engineering design development: mass and energy balances, PFD, P&ID, flowsheets, equipment sizing and capital cost estimation

  • Experience with Power markets, renewable power generation and power electronics not necessary, but highly desirable

  • Skill and Behavior: Capability to work dynamically and collaboratively across multiple teams in a technical environment with minimal supervision. Excellent communication skills. Results-oriented, “can-do” attitude, and “get things done” mentality; comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity; no compromise on attention to quality and details.

  • Technology fluency: Demonstrated understanding of the engineering and operation of equipment in typical hydrogen production facilities. Technical understanding of hydrogen electrolyzers, process and power plant control systems, and dispatch algorithms are a plus.

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $131.000 and $164.050/Annual; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
