The AES Corporation – AES Indiana

AES seeks an attorney with significant Indiana state energy regulatory experience for its Indiana regulated utility, AES Indiana. AES Indiana serves approximately 531,000 customers located in central Indiana. AES Indiana is a fully integrated, regulated electric utility subject to the jurisdiction of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (“IURC”). This business is an important part of AES’ mission of accelerating the future of energy together, by improving lives and delivering exceptional service and value to customers and communities. The position reports to the U.S. Utilities General Counsel and provides counseling to the business on regulatory and legislative matters, including preparing, reviewing, and filing petitions with the IURC. The position works closely with AES Indiana’s Regulatory and Government Affairs Departments and interacts with AES Indiana business areas regarding the review and interpretation of rules, regulations, statutes, and ordinances. The office is located in the Electric Building at 1 Monument Circle, Indianapolis, IN.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Advise the businesses on relevant state regulatory statutes, ordinances, rules and regulations.
Represent the businesses in meetings with regulatory agencies, including IURC and MISO.
Assist in the design and support of regulatory strategies.
Manage and participate in regulatory proceedings and complaint matters.
Interact with regulatory agencies regarding affiliate agreements, filings, and other matters.
Review and advise on legislative matters related to state regulatory issues.
Support regulatory due diligence in business transactions.
Draft regulatory disclosures in connection with company SEC reporting.
Assist in other matters where needed.
Desired Experience and Attributes
J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in Indiana.
6+ years of relevant experience at a large law firm or comparable in-house corporate or governmental agency with a sophisticated energy regulatory practice.
Decisive, organized, methodical, biased toward action, and a commercially focused mindset.
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with multiple internal group members in different functions and businesses.
Independent, self-driven personality capable of carrying out broad legal assignments with minimal supervision and of communicating well with employees at all levels of the organization.
Detail oriented with exceptional regulatory compliance and drafting and negotiating skills.
Requires the ability to manage time well and to quickly adapt to changing schedules and work assignments. Very limited travel may be required.
Strong analytical, problem-solving and consulting abilities with superior judgment and discretion.
Unquestionable ethics and integrity.
