Job Summary

Location: Detroit, MI

Participates in wholesale financial and physical power markets for the purpose of increasing margin to ET. Analyzes, monitors, and reacts to market fundamentals to develop and execute trading strategies to create value and manage risk congruent with VaR, Risk, and Company guidance, in adherence to company policies and procedures.

Role is mainly self-directed, responsible for interacting with market participants to develop, negotiate, and execute opportunistic business opportunities that create value for the company. Responsible for developing trading views based on market fundamental analysis including weather, S&D, transmission, fuels, credit, and other market factors. Must work well in a team environment with traders, analysts, support staff, risk, and other company officers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the trading of financial/physical power market

  • Develops intermediate or long-term strategies to maximize profitability for the organization

  • Responsible for fundamental analysis or direction of analysis from support staff

  • Ability to trade locational spreads, natural gas, and other derivatives to optimize portfolio

  • Cultivates customer business by being a market maker for internal and external customers

  • Serves as internal and external expert and sponsor in market areas of interest

  • Understand legal, regulatory, and structuring concepts impacting customer and market development

  • Adherence to all Company and Risk Policy and Procedures

  • Performs all other related duties as assigned

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university and at least 5 years of professional experience in applicable industries, including experience managing a proprietary trading book

Other Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Extensive knowledge of trading regulations and markets

  • Thorough understanding of North American power markets, including, but not limited to, supply and demand, logistics, regulations, and operations

  • Specific knowledge of hedging and trading techniques for specific region

  • Thorough understanding of all financial and physical products that are viable for executing trading strategies and hedges

  • Thorough understanding of risk measurement techniques such as VaR used in measuring specific trading activity

  • Ability to generate creative solutions to achieve goals

  • Proactive, decisive individual who aggressively seeks new market opportunities

Other Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of finance, accounting, production, operations, and public policy issues facing the power market in the assigned region

  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced dynamic commodity market environment, where there are often time constraints and time sensitive deadlines

  • Works effectively with a team to accomplish shared objectives

  • Effective oral and written communication internally and externally

  • Strong proficiency in MS Office
