Purpose

The Estimator, Wind Technical Services will develop, manage, plan, coordinate and assist with wind and solar capital and operating project cost estimates for Avangrid Renewables. Avangrid currently operates approximately 600 MW of wind & solar generation facilities and plans to add facilities at a rate of approximately 1000 MW/year in the near term.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain accurate pricing models, records and estimates for capital or operating budgets, and support new development opportunities for future approved budgets and forecasts.

  • Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work, required contents of estimate and critical tasks to complete the project.

  • Review design options and recommend best solution based on cost, materials, etc. Calculate cost data necessary for preparing budgets and capital forecasts based on quantity take-offs, materials, labor, equipment, historical costs, and specialty items.

  • Possibly conduct project site visits with potential contractors and engineering firms.

  • Review cost reports from completed/existing projects to establish standard cost data & set appropriate contingency levels.

  • Research historical data (analysis reports) and compile summary reports to develop guidelines for future estimates.

  • Develop and manage master capital and operating estimating models using Excel.

  • Maintain files of working documents to support project estimates, including construction costs and equipment price lists.

  • Monitor budget variances using SAP costs accounting system and price trends in key cost areas.

  • Supports Avangrid Renewables business development through good working relationships with clients, subcontractors, vendors, and co-workers to strengthen company position, resolve issues, solicit business, and formulate estimates.

  • Incorporate feedback from existing and new projects to keep cost database up to date.

  • Support a team of project professionals on new projects regarding conceptual design and operations.

  • Provide cost estimates to support the analysis of potential contractors’ costs and project acquisitions.

  • Display personal and professional ethics and complies with enforces company policies and procedures.

  • Adhere to effective internal controls.

Skills and Requirements

Education & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, related degree, or equivalent combination of education & experience

  • 5 - 10 years’ experience as an Estimator or equivalent combination of technical training and/or related experience in plant construction, production, or operations

  • 5+ years’ experience with wind & solar plant design, and/or heavy civil construction techniques

  • 2+ years’ experience in electric generation project development and/or project management

  • Demonstrated and advanced knowledge of construction market, estimating strategies, estimating techniques, cost control, and proper scheduling of purchases and work

  • Knowledge & experience in the principles & practices of the Project Stage Gate (FEL/Classes) Processes

  • Knowledge of budget preparation, implementation, and oversight

  • Experience working within Cost Estimating Softwares (HeavyBid preferred)

  • Technical competence & recent work experience regarding wind & solar generation projects are preferred

  • Proven experience with advanced Excel spreadsheet development is preferred

  • Past work experiences as a Sr. Cost estimator for a large Owner Company or Civil Construction Company is preferred

  • Experience with wind & solar plant design, construction techniques, and operations, are preferred

  • Experience in project management processes are preferred

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, purchase orders, contracts, WBS/CBS, cost coding systems

  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and HeavyBid (HCSS) or other Cost Estimating Software

  • 10%-20% travel required

  • Ability to foster and participate in a productive team environment by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, customers, contractors, and vendors

  • Ability to analyze project risks, understand project scope, and proactively identify solutions with a flexible, creative, and solution-focused outlook on problem solving

  • Maintains effectiveness during procedural/organizational changes and when dealing with varying personality styles and tasks

  • Effectively provides and receives information orally in individual and group situations
