Job Summary

Lead the development of weather forecasting for the CenterPoint Energy service areas. Provides oversight of short-term weather forecasting including communication and reporting of the resulting influence and effect on enterprise-wide operations and systems. Monitors weather hazard conditions across 6 states including but not limited to wildfire risks, extreme heat and cold, geomagnetic disturbances, severe and inclement weather, and tropical storms.

Essential Functions

  • Analyzes and monitors weather forecasts and various models to provide operational weather data and reports that support operational decision-making during all critical weather conditions.

  • Collaborates with Electric and Gas Operations teams, utilizing forecast information in conjunction with weather hazard risk and outage modeling, to make recommendations for implementing operational protocols to reduce the weather hazard risk and improve response to critical weather conditions.

  • Ensures duties are performed in accordance with all regulatory compliance obligations.

  • Gathers and analyzes meteorological data from public and private sources. Use all sources to provide accurate and timely weather forecasts, with a particular emphasis on conditions that pose a risk to our operational activities.

  • Prepares and disseminates operational weather reports.

  • Maintains and develops tools and dashboards that visualize real-time and future weather conditions to ensure the efficient communication of evolving weather risks.

  • Monitors and reports to leaders real-time and forecast weather conditions on a recurring basis during storm and critical weather events.

  • Provides daily, short- and long-term seasonal weather forecasts to promote preparedness, and proactive resource allocation in the case of pending weather events.

  • Maintains and enhances procedures for monitoring weather across the enterprise.

  • Serves as the subject matter expert for all weather-related matters.

  • Utilizes outage risk models in conjunction with weather forecasts to develop recommended operational protocols and actions.

  • Serves as a liaison between the National Weather Service and CenterPoint Energy

  • Works closely with internal teams, external partners, and meteorological organizations to gather and exchange relevant data, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of current and forecasted weather conditions and risks.

  • Stays abreast of advancements in meteorological science, fire weather forecasting techniques, and risk modeling methodologies.

  • Implements improvements to existing processes and contributes to the development of new strategies to enhance our weather risk management capabilities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • 24/7 availability to support emergency operations and disasters.

Education Description

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science, Environmental Sciences, or related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience

  • At least 5-7 years progressively responsible experience in weather risk analysis and operational meteorology.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to communicate either written and verbal communications either in person or through technical equipment such as telephone.

  • Able to demonstrate and apply the manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and common office equipment.

  • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

  • Able to operate a motor vehicle and drive a motor vehicle daily or for extended time periods, in a safe manner, and enter/exit vehicle unassisted.

  • Able to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.

  • Able to work a varied schedule with projects and deadlines requiring the ability to meet changing demands.

  • Able to reach, grasp, and move items.

  • Able to distinguish color.

Working Conditions

  • Able to support the Emergency Preparedness and Response program enterprise wide.

  • Able to work extended hours during a 24/7 emergency event.

  • Able to function successfully in environment with moderate pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Able to work indoors, in an office environment, regardless of whether open office, cubicle or private office.

  • Able to travel occasionally, possibly overnight.
