Job Summary

Substation Performance Electricians: troubleshoots, operates, maintains and repairs substation equipment.

Location is Webster, Texas and the shift is Monday-Thursday 0630-1700

Essential Functions

  • Removes various pieces of equipment from service.

  • Works on large transformers and circuit breakers.

  • Applies settings, calibrates, maintains and troubleshoots protective relaying and computer-controlled supervisory equipment and knows all the related control circuitry of a transmission and distribution substation.

  • Operates the bulk power-transmission/substation system, provides high voltage switching and grounding as necessary.

  • Operates test equipment such as relay tables, digital supervisory simulators, high voltage dielectric strength testers and transducer calibrators to troubleshoot and repair.

  • Climbs steel structures to heights of 60 feet or more, and works from aerial devices at heights up to 60 feet or more to install and maintain substation equipment.

  • Works near wire and tubing conductors energized with high voltage electricity, on larger transformers and circuit breakers.

  • Operates vehicle (up to 2 tons) up to 50 miles per day or more in city traffic to substation locations.

  • Loads and unloads vehicle, lifting equipment up to 50 pounds.

Education Description

  • Associate of Applied Science Degree in Electronics or Electrical Technology: or two years (60 credit hours) of formal training in electrical, electronics, engineering, or related technical discipline or the equivalent industrial or military work experience.

Experience

  • Must have experience in electrical/electronics or equivalent or military training.

  • Must have successfully completed three years apprentice training program in order to advance to electrician.

  • Ability to use basic mathematics, interpret and use measurements related to electricity.

  • Ability to use and care for hand tools and equipment.

  • Knowledge of basic substation equipment use and operation.

  • Knowledge of safety rules and company regulations regarding safety.

  • Ability to operate test equipment such as relay test tables, digital supervisory tests simulators, high dielectric strength tester and transducer calibrators.

  • Ability to use, but not limited to, test instruments such as ammeters, phase angle meters, signal generators, oscilloscopes, D.B. meters, wave form analyzers, capacitance and resistance bridges, transformer turns ratio test sets.

  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License and must maintain a safe driving record.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform tasks (20%), walk (40%), and bend (40%).

  • Ability to positions include squatting (20%), extended reach above head (20%), and extended reach in front 30 inches.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and lower to ground, and lift 20 pounds up to 10 times per hour for distances of 20 feet.

  • Ability to be able to wear full face respirators while wearing various protective devices.

  • Job requires working overtime and responding to emergency call outs whenever they occur (7 days a week/24 hours a day).

  • Works in outside environment with heat, cold, rain, and humidity, depending upon the season.

  • Requires working at heights of 60 feet or more above ground.

  • Will be exposed to oil, grease, and various solvents: and may be exposed to SF-6 has, hydrazine, chlorine, PVC acetone, PCB or other potentially hazardous chemicals.

  • Must maintain body weight at or below 280 pounds due to use of weight-restricted equipment necessary to perform tasks.
