Job Summary

CenterPoint Energy is looking for a Civil CEHE Electric Engineer to join our High Voltage Civil Design Team , located in Houston, TX .

You will have the ability to: provide design and analysis for the transmission and substation system regarding reliability, material adequacy, inspection technologies and addition or replacement of facilities.

Essential Functions

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Design or analyze structures for the Transmission, Telecom, Distribution, and Substation engineering departments. This includes reviewing/producing the required structure drawings and specifications to be able to order material and install the structures.

  • Coordinate Substation site (grading and paving) improvement work in support of Substation Capital work which can include expansion of existing subs, site design for new subs, and for the installation/replacement of major substation components such as transformers and breakers.

  • Interface with fabricators engineering staff to finalize structure design for fabrication while maintaining project schedule.

  • Provide support through executing stress analysis as required and providing analysis results and recommendations to requesting parties such as transmission project engineers, foundation design engineers, etc.

  • Perform check/approval of vendor design drawings.

  • Make presentations (written or oral) to management and others on pertinent issues.

  • Serve as a department representative on task forces, committee, and cross-functional teams. Develop and maintain standards and material specifications in support of structural and site development design procedures.

  • Provide recommended construction procedures and practices for structure installations depending on site conditions.

  • Interface with inspectors, engineers, construction personnel, warehousing personnel, purchasing agents, vendors, and management as required for projects.

  • Recommend and assist in preparing requests for proposal (RFP) and budget proposals, evaluating contractor bids, and review contract terms and conditions for site development projects.

  • Additional duties include/require knowledge of industry codes and standards (e.g. ACI, AISC, ASCE).

Education Description

Your background includes:

  • Requires a Bachelor of Science degree Civil or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university.

Experience

  • Requires a minimum of two years' experience in a related engineering discipline.

  • Note that a Master of Science degree in Engineering can be substituted for 1 year of experience. And a PhD degree in Engineering can be substituted for 2 years of experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to communicate either written and verbal communications either in person or through technical equipment such as telephone.

  • Able to demonstrate and apply the manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and common office equipment.

  • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

  • Able to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.

  • Able to certify and use personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear and earplugs on a daily basis.

  • Able to operate a motor vehicle and drive a motor vehicle daily or for extended time periods, in a safe manner, and enter/exit vehicle unassisted.

Working Conditions

  • Required to participate in CenterPoint Energy's Emergency Operation Plan (EOP).

  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Able to work in an office environment.

  • Able to work indoors in an office environment and outdoors with occasional exposure to all weather conditions, equipment, and noise when at field installation sites.

  • Able to work regular hours, with occasional or mandatory overtime; may be required to work rotating shifts.
