BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P LE CORPORATE ENERGY PLANNING Department of the P INTEGRATED GRID PLANNING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

JOB FUNCTION:

Performs planning and engineering analyses primarily related to long-range resource planning processes (i.e., Integrated Grid Planning, Integrated Resource Planning), and providing technical support with expanded assignments in the Company’s corporate energy resource planning initiatives, strategies, and policies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Under the direction of the Manager, Corporate Energy Planning, leads the work on the Integrated Grid Planning (IGP), Integrated Resource Planning (IRP), and other long-range planning activities for the Oahu, Maui County, and Hawaii island systems. Assists the Manager of Corporate Energy Planning in developing process strategies and scenarios for analysis. Manages and coordinates planning work with operating, planning, demand-side program, engineering, forecasting, and other areas of the company. Performs scenario analyses using resource screening and optimization models and interprets and develops summaries and recommendations of the results. Prepares and presents material at internal and external meetings. Creates, develops, and reviews reports to various external agencies such as the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission (PUC), the State Legislature, and general public.

  • Under the direction of the Manager, Corporate Energy Planning, performs analysis (broad engineering, operational, regulatory, and resource planning) in support of the development of corporate strategies and development of key strategic initiatives, including engineering support in risk assessment and evaluation. Provides summaries and creates presentation material to communicate the strategies and plans to senior management and the Board of Directors.

  • Prepares and presents administrative reports/documents such as project schedules, project status, strategic action plan, budget inputs, and risk assessments. Serves as the technical advisor and/or consultant for inter-and intra-departmental work groups, as well as Company Representative on specific assignments.

  • Prepares written testimony and testifies as a Company witness and subject matter expert in PUC hearings for planning exhibits submitted as part of project applications.

  • Provides support in other specific assignments as directed within the Integrated Grid Planning division. Researches, develops, coordinates, and evaluates political, regulatory and technical changes, innovations, and progress related to integration of various energy resources to the Oahu, Maui County, and Hawaii island systems.

  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    Knowledge Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of engineering principles and theories acquired through a college level curriculum resulting in a bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.

  • Working knowledge of utility planning principles, including, but not limited to, electric power system generation, transmission, and distribution planning, normally acquired through college level curriculum in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent utility work experience.

  • Working knowledge of utility economic analyses, environmental and other state and federal laws and regulations as related to the company’s corporate plans for renewable energy and Integrated Resource Planning scenario process.

  • Thorough knowledge of personal computers and related software applications to include word processing, spreadsheet, presentations, databases, and specialized load flow and resource planning/optimizing models.

  • Professional engineer registration highly preferred to allow development and/or delivery of expert testimony before the Public Utilities Commission.

  • Ability to identify potential challenges, communicate issues timely and assist with modification of plans to adapt to changing circumstances.

  • Excellent computer skills using software applications to include MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project. Previous experience with specialized electric utility simulation and resource planning/optimizing models such as RESOLVE, PLEXOS, Pmonth, and PSSE highly preferred.

  • Ability to remain composed and flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.

    Experience Requirements

  • Extensive (8+) years of experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Utility planning experience in the areas of generation planning, transmission planning, distribution planning, or engineering related field.

  • Design or operation of utility generation or transmission & distribution systems.
