BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P XR SYSTEM PROTECTION Department of the P T&D AND INTERCONNECTION PLNG Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

JOB FUNCTION:

Performs planning, engineering, and operational support duties as assigned to develop and analyze protection schemes, relay settings, and protective device coordination for the orderly expansion and enhancement of the Company's generating resources and electrical transmission systems, electrical sub-transmission, and distribution systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs and conducts relay and protective device coordination studies to recommend relay settings and protective device operation and placement.

  • Prepares plans, diagrams, design sketches and calculations, and other engineering studies as required for capital additions to the generation, transmission, and distribution systems.

  • Reviews and recommends modifications/improvements to design of relay protection and control schematic diagrams.

  • Performs post fault relay analysis on common system outages and in certain situations analyzes relay operations following severe system outages.

  • Consults and collaborates with T&D Planning groups to perform system stability simulations to determine relay settings for critical relay applications.

  • Coordinates, reviews, and directs the designs and studies submitted by outside consultants for interconnection to the electrical grids.

  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent degree in appropriate education and experience required. Emphasis in the field of Power System Analysis is highly desirable.

  • Working knowledge of the methods and principles of short circuit analysis, power system load flow analysis, and power system stability analysis.

  • Working knowledge of the principles of power system protective relaying, symmetrical components, per unit calculations, phasors, interpreting short circuit output results, short circuit case selection, the physical and electrical overvoltage/overcurrent withstand characteristics and behavior of electrical equipment.

  • Working (technical) knowledge of the various protective devices used on the electrical system, the impact of system grounding on protective relaying, and the concepts involved in calculating settings for generator, transformer, bus and line protection.

  • Working (technical) knowledge of the characteristics of various transformer connections and impact on protective relaying, directionality and polarization, and power system harmonic impacts.

    Skills Requirements

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computer and related programs including spreadsheet & word processor applications, ASPEN OneLiner relay coordination program, ASPEN Line Constants line/cable impedance program, PSS/E load flow, PSS/E dynamic simulation, and PSS/E line impedance programs. Familiarity with Synergi is desirable.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and construct electrical drawings including single-line and three-line diagrams, AC and DC schematics, wiring/connection drawings, and logic diagrams.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and construct R-X and P-Q diagrams, time-current-coordination curves, and relay oscillography.

  • Analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills to handle detailed projects and programs.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult and/or sensitive issues. Ability to handle such issues with professionalism while using tact, courtesy, and discretion.

  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills including effective written, oral, listening and interpersonal skills, to work effectively with all levels of the company, with outside contractors and consultants, governmental agencies, community groups, and customers.

    Experience Requirements

  • Multiple (5 - 7) years experience in high voltage protective relaying including experience in loop system relay coordination, protection of DG systems, and calculating settings for microprocessor-based & multi-function relays.

  • Professional Engineer Registration in the State of Hawaii in Electrical Engineering is required.
