Job Purpose: Technical Lead for Substation Maintenance (SSM) Engineers and oversees the Electric Transformer Shops

Overview: Plans work and is the Technical Lead for the Substation Maintenance Engineers who perform specialized electrical and diagnostic testing and guidance on over 200 substations on Long Island. The group is also responsible for Procedure writing for test and maintenance of equipment; collecting and reviewing equipment data; maintaining equipment databases; recommending and ordering replacement equipment, spare parts and test equipment; determining whether equipment can be returned to service; preparing compliance, failure and test reports; traveling throughout the US and abroad for factory visits, committee meetings and equipment acceptance testing; review substation one-lines and equipment specifications; create project job specifications for corrective action and/or the betterment of the transmission and distribution (T&D) system and performs project work to support the SSM Field organization.

Oversees the efficiency and productivity of the Electrical Shops as the Technical Lead. The Electric Shops include the transformer and salvage shops in which substation and other electrical equipment is received, dressed, acceptance tested, repaired and/or scrapped. Spare equipment, mobile transformers and transformer insulating oil are housed and maintained at this location. In-house transformer insulating oil is also performed by this group.

Performs Storm Restoration duties as required

Performs after hours, rotational standby duties

Key Accountabilities:

Safety of the works force

Leads monthly safety committee meetings

Ensures current licensure and training credentials of the group

Makes authoritative technical recommendations

Technical Lead in evaluating and implementing engineering processes and new technologies with consideration for T&D operations, safety and electrical test and maintenance

Participates in programs associated with the construction, repair and maintenance and reliable operation of the LIPA transmission and distribution system

Develops and maintains plans and relationships with vendors and across the LIPA T&D system to trial and implement new technologies and electrical test and maintenance practices

Coordinates and meets with internal and external customers to ensure excellence in customer satisfaction

Keep current on industry trends and maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable electric utility standards as it relates to best practices

Able to respond, coordinate and/or lead activities during abnormal conditions or emergencies

Provides technical guidance to, support and coaching to others in order to share knowledge and develop technical understanding

Challenges existing ways of working and continuously seek ways to do things better in order to drive greater efficiencies

Required, Education, Knowledge & Experience:

Bachelors of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

Minimum of 8 years of experience with substation maintenance, electric utility operation

Five years of direct experience with electrical test and maintenance equipment

Ability to interpret substation and substation equipment electrical drawings

Ability to interpret electrical test & maintenance data to determine asset health

Expereince managing/supervising Union personnel

This position requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history.

Preferred Knowledge & Experience:

Ability to become a licensed Professional Engineer within 2 years
