Overall Responsibilities:The IT Applications Developer Job Family encompasses job responsibilities and accountability for various IT applications development, system administration, and support functions necessary to ensure a stable and reliable application environment for NiSource. The application environment encompasses mission critical information systems such as Gas distribution, Hydro and Electrical Grid control systems, Electronic Measurement and other business critical applications. The job also includes the analysis and development of business applications, system interfaces, and other duties related to application system development life cycle.The IT Applications Developer Job Family has 3 levels: Applications Developer, Senior Applications Developer and Lead Applications Developer, which provided grown opportunity for our staff members. The qualifications and experience for each step in this job family are defined in the Responsibilities and Selection Criteria sections below.

Essential Responsibilities: The IT Applications Developer job family is responsible and accountable for:

Performing application system production support, maintenance and development under the direction of the Manager and/or their designee.

Performing System Administration and Change Management functions in accordance with defined procedures.

Leadership and execution of application development projects, working with IT service providers, and participation in cross-functional teams in advancing corporate initiatives, and deliver fully integrated IT services and solutions.

Support of stable and reliable 24/7/365 operation of application services that meet business desired Service Levels.

The IT Applications Developer will be expected to:

Be proficient with MS Office tools such as Word, Excel, and Access.

Be knowledgeable in industry standard software development life cycle methodologies (SDLC) such as RUP, SCRUM, Waterfall, etc.

Possess prior experience in leading and/or participating in large scale projects and following project management methodology

Understanding of ITIL principles and desire to continuously improve operations.

Be proficient with common software development tools and methods such as C++, C#, Visual Basic, and the .NET environment, IIS, XML, etc. including open source.

Have knowledge of MS Windows, MS SQL Server, MS Windows Server, MS Visio and MS Project.

Have an understanding of relational database design concepts (table structure; one-to-many relationships) and how to query data using Structured Query Language (SQL)

Develop system application deliverables such as screen layouts, graphical user interfaces, reports, system interfaces, test scripts, and training documents with moderate to limited management direction.

Prior experience with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and/or Electronic Measurement, and/or Building Automation and/or plant automation control systems and applications.

Understanding of network infrastructure including basic knowledge of network transport technologies (MPLS, Radio, Satellite).

In addition to the expectations for the IT Applications Developer, the Senior Applications Developer Level will be expected to:

Be proficient with MS Windows, MS SQL Server, MS Windows Server, MS Visio and MS Project.

Be proficient in their understanding of relational database design concepts (table structure; one-to-many relationships) and how to query data using Structured Query Language (SQL)

Knowledge of SCADA, Electronic Measurement, Network/Radio/VSAT/CDMA based communication systems and process control technologies.

Knowledge and prior experience in deploying, managing and administering industry standard energy system control solutions such as Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric (Telvent), Wonderware, OSIsoft, Emerson Process Control, GE, PI, system, etc.

Understand and utilize project management in the implementation of any projects of significance.

Provide technical oversight of the applications they support with moderate to limited management direction.

Assist outside vendors/suppliers of software or services with the resolution of any issues impacting the applications they support.

Develop system application specifications utilizing business knowledge and test developed programs to ensure proper functionality and implementation

Develop and maintain system documentation including process maps, data flows, infrastructure diagrams, as well as installation and configuration procedures.

In addition to the expectations for the Senior Applications Developer, the Lead Applications Developer role will be expected to:

Lead various sized projects and be responsible for the planning, task and resource management, budget, and deployment.

Be accountable for the strategic direction of all applications in their area of responsibility with limited management direction. This includes maintaining the application, operating system, and database management systems at current release levels.

Applications Developer (Real Time Systems):In addition to the items under the Essential Responsibilities for this position:

Four-year Degree in Computer Science, Engineering related area, OR equivalent experience.

General understanding of Real Time Systems, Commercial Natural Gas Distribution or Electric generation systems is a plus.

Senior Applications Developer (In addition to the requirements for Systems Analyst level):

Have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in a development environment or Real Time Systems (SCADA or Electronic Measurement), or in Commercial Natural Gas Distribution or Electric generation systems.

Lead Applications Developer Level (In addition to the requirements for Senior Systems Analyst level):

Have a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in a development environment or Real Time Systems (SCADA or Electronic Measurement), or in Commercial Natural Gas Distribution or Electric generation systems.

Competent to work at the highest technical level of all phases of SCADA/EM system support and associated technologies including understanding of various telecommunication protocols, RTUs including software, PC based RTU test equipment, telecom communication circuits, plant interface metering, and SCADA interface with plant PLC control systems.

Communication and interpersonal skills including ability to consult with internal and external customers regarding matters/issues which may be sensitive in nature is key.

Broad knowledge base of IT industry disciplines and approaches is key
