Job Summary

The Gas Control Engineer is the lead subject matter expert for all Gas Control operational data. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently. This position is also responsible for training and evaluating Gas Control personnel according to the requirements set forth by Control Room Management (CRM) and Operator Qualification (OQ) regulation. The individual selected for this role will be considered the technical SME representing the department regarding data, analytics, and applications used by Gas Control.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops, tracks, and communicates departmental metrics, and creates and maintains advanced analytics, reports, and visualizations to help identify / avoid issues.

  • Retrieves and prepares data in response to internal and external data requests.

  • Assumes administrative/contributor and training responsibilities for software related to the Pi System.

  • Reviews incidents and incorporates lessons-learned into training program when appropriate.

  • Works with Gas Control Support team in preparation for CRM and pipeline safety related audits.

  • Supports maintenance and improvement of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and software programs used by Gas Control.

  • Maintains DOT Operator Qualification (OQ) for Gas Controller duties.

  • Responds to emergency conditions via data analytics or real-time function within Gas Control.

  • Acts as Gas Control SME in multi-stakeholder projects that require Gas Control data and/or have future impact to Gas Control.

  • Stays up to date over current and evolving state and federal laws, recommends possible courses of action regarding future compliance policy, and develops action plans for those affected.

  • Updates processes and procedures of associated applications in response to changes, improvements efficiency, and to ensure data accuracy and integrity.

  • Duties include participating in a 24-hour standby rotation, performs Gas Control supervision and/or Gas Controller duties as needed while following change management protocols for CRM related processes and procedures to ensure compliance.

  • Coaches other team members in the development of their skills through on-the-job training and promotes teamwork concept within the gas control function.

  • Works as a member of the team, willingly providing back-up support for co-workers, actively supporting team and company goals, and collecting/assembling information for presentations, projects and strategic planning.

Required Qualifications for Position

  • 2+ years of gas/electric utility experience or relevant control room experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college/university.

  • Must pass pre-hire Console Operator Basic Requirements Assessment (COBRA)

  • Operator Qualified in all Gas Control AORs controlled by primary Gas Control Center.

  • Able to pass DOT random drug testing.

  • Proficient understanding Pipeline & Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA) Control Room Management (CRM) procedures and regulations.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well in team environment and provide leadership or guidance to others when needed.

  • Able to identify risks and communicate to peers / management as needed.

  • Able to make decisions with less than accurate or incomplete information.

  • Experience in organizing and analyzing data from multiple sources.

  • Possess advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of applications, as well as experience with SCADA systems, data historians & business intelligence applications such as: AVEVA Enterprise SCADA, AVEVA Pi System, SPSS, and Power BI.

  • In depth understanding of the SCADA event database.

  • Valid Driver's license

Preferred Qualifications for Position

  • Experience with pipeline hydraulic modeling software

  • Engineering in Training certificate or Professional Engineer

  • Advanced understanding of/experience with principles of project management

Salary Range:

$91,000.00 - $136,600.00
