About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co.., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [SC00]

As part of the Data/WAN Network team supporting the voice and data network across the FirstEnergy footprint. Responsible for architecture, engineering, design, implementation, operation, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and ongoing reliability of Local Area Network (LAN) systems. This includes network routing & switching, wireless LAN networks, data center networks (Nexus, PODs, etc.), and the support of voice & video services (VoIP, voice mail, voice recorders, phones, IVR, video, and satellite).

Responsibilities Include:

  • Delivering high-performance high-availability LAN systems, in a 24/7 enterprise, fully monitored to achieve service expectations, scalable to business needs, and that have appropriate disaster recovery capabilities.

  • Participating in LAN projects to ensure computing and network architecture solutions are solid, well integrated, and comply with technical strategy.

  • Support other FE Teams (i.e. other IT Teams, Building Facilities, Security, etc.) to resolve problems and to develop network connectivity for new systems.

  • Supporting the operational performance and maintenance of existing Data Network systems as well as design and delivery of new products/product enhancements.

  • Implementing technical standards and regulatory requirements to Data Network systems.

  • Staying current with technology changes and the relationships of technology to emerging business requirements.

  • Leverage Cisco management tools, HP Operations Manager, HP Project and Portfolio Management (PPM), and other tools used to monitor, control & track the performance of these systems and manage the work.

  • Work closely with IT Network Transport Team on data network reconfiguration and maintenance issues.

  • Project and initiative scheduling, financial planning, scope planning and implementation coordination

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Providing daily support for the Data Network team that supports the many technology platforms delivering data, voice, video, and computing services to FE employees, contractors, and business partners.

  2. Ensuring high level of reliability and availability of these systems.

  3. Manages the expectations of FE business units.

  4. Responsible along with others for disaster recovery of these systems.

  5. Understanding and following all applicable policies & procedures to effectively manage risk to FE’s Data Network environments.

  6. Project and initiative scheduling, planning and coordination

Qualifications at the level III include:

  • Bachelor or Associates Degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications or related field required with 5 year of relevant experience. In lieu of a degree, 7 years of relevant experience required.

  • Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to: routing and switching equipment, LAN topologies, network protocols.

  • CCNP preferred.

  • “Hands on experience” with Cisco wireless LAN systems.

  • Experience managing Data center networks.

  • Experience with Carrier provided leased circuits.

  • Management, programming and configuration of Cisco voice systems and voice services (VoIP, voice mail, voice recorders, IVRs, telephone instruments and softphones).

  • Managing video conferencing systems is a plus

  • Experience with satellite telephone technology is a plus.

  • Knowledge of the OSI reference model.

  • “Trouble shooting” of complex network issues and problems.

  • Experience working with internal and manufacturer/distributor engineering and maintenance Subject Matter Experts (SME).

  • Experience reading and interpreting SNIFFER traces is a plus.

  • Preferred experience includes project management concepts & tools

  • Experience with environmental support systems for technology platforms (e.g., HVAC, AC/DC power systems, batteries, generators, etc.).

  • Core competencies include interpersonal, communications (written & verbal), and presentation skills.

  • Travel (including overnight)

Qualifications at the level IV include all of the above plus:

  • Bachelor or Associates Degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications or related field required with 7 years relevant experience. In lieu of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience required.

  • In-depth knowledge of relevant work experience .

  • Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to: routing and switching equipment, LAN topologies, network protocols.
