Department Summary

The Grid Management System Operation Support team is responsible for the development and maintenance of operating policies and procedures, management of a NERC compliance program, and the training and certification of System Controllers, Distribution Controllers and LVD Dispatchers. We support safe and excellent operations through an agile procedure process, extensive training using a performance-based model and ensuring compliance is part of daily business operations.

Job Description

The LVD Dispatch Trainer will work as part of the System Operations Training team supporting the design, development and implementation of training for the LVD Dispatchers in the Grand Rapids, Jackson and Saginaw Dispatch Centers.


  • Design, develop and implement LVD Dispatch virtual and classroom-based training activities.

  • Design and implement scenario and performance-based training activities.

  • Assess and observe the communications, switching orders and operational decisions of employees participating in initial and continuing training activities.

  • Coordinate initial and continuing training activities with new and incumbent employees to support successful development of the LVD Dispatch workforce.

  • Partner with the L&D team to incorporate core training activities into the LVD Dispatch initial and continuing training programs.

  • Support overall training activities for the System Operations Training team.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the development and reviews of Grid Management operating procedures.

  • Participate in storm operations, having a defined storm role, to support the timely restoration of customers and ensure safety of the public and Consumers Energy employees.

Required Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelors degree with a math/science emphasis or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 5 or more years of applicable work experience.

  • Ability to effectively interact with team members, students, external teams and leadership to foster an effective and positive learning environment.

  • Maintain skills and training to operate system as a support resource during storm or other emergency operations. If the candidate is not currently qualified, they must obtain the necessary skills and qualifications within 6 months.

  • Ability to work and adapt in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, OneNote and SharePoint.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal training experience using the ADDIE process to design, develop and implement training.

  • Training development experience using Microsoft PowerPoint or other tools for classroom or computer-based training.

  • CE Way/Lean experience and/or training.

  • Advanced organizational and problem-solving skills to achieve operational, financial and breakthrough goals.

  • Ability to read construction prints, knowledge of capabilities of vehicles, equipment and tools.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Service Suite, OMS and storm support roles

Essential Functions

  • Business Support Advisors and Consultants support the planning, business analysis, general management, budget preparations and analysis, negotiations, transactions, customer services and auditing of a wide variety of business functions and processes of specific operating and support areas throughout the company.

  • Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, departments and offices.

  • Lead and/or assist with business analysis and support for the plans, reports, impacts, contracts, schedules, estimates, data collection, observations, and field investigations.

  • Provide business analysis and support services with accuracy, on time and under budget.

  • Use computer assisted applications software and equipment to prepare business analysis support documents.

  • Understand and follow Company established standard procedures for file structure and standard procedures for projects.

  • Become familiar with business and department and Company plans and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately.

  • Assist in client contact and communication.

  • Utilize effective communication skills to answer inquiries from coworkers, clients, or the public.

  • Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional speaking or meeting with stakeholders.

  • Attend internal and external meetings.

  • Provide business analysis and support services in a legal and ethical manner.

  • Individuals should exemplify safe work practices and follow the Company‚Äôs compliance standards.

  • Regular attendance is expected.

Hours and Travel

  • This position requires the individual work 40 hours per week with 70% of the time spent in the office and 30% spent in specific field locations.

  • This position may require the ability to travel between field locations.

  • This position may include nights and weekend/holiday timeframes.
