Position Summary

Under direct supervision, Controller Trainees assist and support the operation of the gas system by learning to operate the gas system to ensure reliability and safety through monitoring and controlling of pressures and flow rates on all Company gas systems 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Responsible for training under Gas System Controllers, Analysts and Schedulers to learn all aspects of the information used by Controllers. Trainees are not able to control the gas system unsupervised.

Essential Responsabilities

  • Assists and supports Qualified Gas System Controllers while observing the actions and gaining knowledge of the job. Follows direction of Controllers to begin operating the system unsupervised. Is responsible for his/her own learning and must ask questions and demonstrate knowledge gained from observation and practice.

  • At six month evaluation, must know location and function of top 25 stations, be able to complete all paperwork of position, be able to perform callout for afterhours line locates, and understand HP Gas Operations staff and coverage areas.

  • At twelve month evaluation must be able to balance needs of system and power generation with hourly request and no-notice storage service, be able to remotely start and stop all compressor stations, and be able to correctly identify sites on all SCADA overviews with at least 85% accuracy

  • Learns characteristics of natural gas and transmission equipment such as compressors, regulators, control valves, chromatographs, and various styles of meters through field visits and training materials.

  • Assists and supports Scheduling Specialists while learning the background of the documents used in providing the Controllers with daily operating guidelines. Also must learn what other tasks are performed by Specialists that may be affected by Controller actions such as Imbalance Tracking.

  • Assists and supports Gas Control Analysts while learning how the SCADA system is programmed and maintained. Also learns the logic and use of the Low Pressure Control System.

  • Studies the Operator Qualification materials in preparation to pass the Performance Evaluation in order to be Qualified as a Gas System Controller.

  • Becomes proficient with all documents and online computer systems used by Controllers to request services provided by Pipelines and Residue Plant Operators and to track hourly and daily data.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school education or GED

  • Minimum three years natural gas operations experience, high pressure operations experience is preferred

  • Knowledge of DOT, FERC and PUC regulations is beneficial.

  • Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets and Microsoft Windows.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills.

  • Rotating shift work is required as well as reporting for duty in all weather conditions.

  • Manager evaluations are conducted at six month intervals.

  • Must receive postive evaluation and pass Operator Qualification testing before 24 months in department.
