Make a difference in the lives of area youth! The Gainesville Police Department is seeking a Youth Program Intervention Specialist, overseeing the development of Reichert House youth participants who are Elementary, Middle, or High School students. Youth Program Intervention Specialists promote student success at school, home, and in the community through education and life skills development.

A typical day's duties may include but not limited to: providing supervision and case management for at-risk youth participating in the Reichert House Youth Program based on school-level [e.g., elementary, middle, or high school level]; educating and inspiring youth participants by promoting a healthy and drug-free life style through instructional and adventurous activities; conducting fact finding interviews; developing and monitoring individual case plans; coordinating case assignments for multi-needs participants; providing referrals for counseling and family services when appropriate; providing school grade-appropriate educational enrichment training and age-appropriate job readiness training; providing recreational and physical education activities to promote wellness and social skills; providing discipline and self-control training through para-military style activities; providing transportation for students via City vehicle; completing weekly status reports regarding unit performance and vehicle inspections. Prefer grants administration experience.

To be considered for this position you must possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration, public administration, education, family social science, physical education, psychology, sociology, social work or related area; and some youth services work or volunteer experience, such as YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, schools, recreational facilities, and other youth services-oriented facilities.

OR an associate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration, public administration, education, family social science, physical education, psychology, sociology, social work or related area; and two (2) years of youth services work or volunteer experience, such as YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, schools, recreational facilities, and other youth services-oriented facilities.

OR graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and four (4) years of more responsible youth services work or volunteer experience, such as YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, schools, recreational facilities, and other youth services-oriented facilities.

**Note: Physical Requirements: Continuation in the hiring process is contingent upon the successful completion of a strength and agility test.

Licenses

  • Valid Florida Driver License required at time of appointment.

Certifications

  • American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid is required upon appointment.

  • Handle with CareĀ® certification in behavior management and safe physical intervention is required within twelve (12) months of appointment.

Job Description

SUMMARY

This is responsible para-professional work overseeing the development of Reichert House youth participants who are Elementary, Middle, or High School students within Alachua County to succeed at school, home, and in the community through education and life skills development. The Reichert House is a private non-profit 501(c)3 organization with a Board of Directors and an advisory board.

Positions allocated to this classification report to the Reichert House Youth Program Manager and work under close supervision. Work in this entry level classification is distinguished from the senior level classification by receiving on-the-job and basic in-service training needed to case manage and counsel at risk youth participants and partner with the Reichert House after school teachers to provide the education and life skills needed for each assigned participant.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Provides supervision and case management for at risk youth participating in the Reichert House Youth Program based on school-level (ex. elementary, middle, or high school level).

Educates and inspires youth participants by promoting a healthy and drug-free life style through instructional and adventurous activities.

Conducts fact finding interviews; develops and monitors individual case plans.

Coordinates case assignments for multi-needs participants. Provides referrals for counseling and family services when appropriate.

Provides school grade-appropriate educational enrichment training to prepare for the next grade and/or prepare for college.

Provides age-appropriate job readiness training, including resume writing and interview skills.

Provides recreational and physical education activities to promote wellness and social skills.

Provides discipline and self-control training through para-military style activities in partnership with the Color Guard, Drill Team, and Young Marines Program.

Instills a sense of belonging in the participant through multi-cultural experiences provided in the community, at school, with family and/or program unit.

Ensures a safe and secure environment for participants, staff, and volunteers. Transports the youth participants from school to The Reichert House; and after the program transports the youth participants from The Reichert House to their homes or as directed.

Completes weekly status reports regarding unit performance and vehicle inspections.

Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Below are the required education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Ability to keep records and prepare reports.

Ability to safely transport youth to multiple locations.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Skilled in the use of personal computers and applicable software programs.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess certain physical abilities and be able to withstand work related environmental conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work requires physical strength and agility sufficient to safely perform all essential job functions, including the ability to restrain and control disruptive behavior.

Mostly sedentary work that requires the employee to sit for prolonged periods of time and involves walking or standing.

Continuation in the hiring process is contingent upon the successful completion of a strength and agility test.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work may require overnight travel.

Work may require attending meetings and community events outside of regular business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
