Position Summary

As a Line Design Engineer at Oncor, you’ll design, lead, and oversee engineering responsibilities related to transmission line design project at 69, 138, and 345 kV voltages. Includes engineering, cost estimate creation, project execution, and material procurement.

This position is a hybrid role based in our 777 Main St – Fort Worth, TX location.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Produce engineering designs, drawings, specifications, and bills of material for transmission line construction projects 69,000 - 345,000 Volts in accordance with Company practices while meeting appropriate performance standards. This will require the use of engineering disciplines and practices.

  • Power Line Systems - Computer Aided Design and Drafting (PLS-CADD) modeling, structure analysis and loading trees, developing design criteria, sag-tension calculations, wire blowout, swing angle, damper recommendations, structure spotting, clearance reports, wire selection, etc.

  • Job includes steel, concrete or lattice tower design; foundation designs using drilled pier, stub angle, and/or direct embed; determining proper sag, tension, swing calculation and thermal characteristics of bare, overhead conductors. The projects average 1 to 50 miles of line with costs of $550k to $150M.

  • Prepare budgetary cost estimates and Work Authorizations to obtain financial approval for assigned projects.

  • Communicate, coordinate, and interface with other areas and groups of the Company and with others external to the Company to assure that line designs and construction practices are appropriate.

  • Provide design solutions and engineering designs as requested to resolve line performance problems.

  • Provide technical assistance to Transmission operations and maintenance organizations

  • Develop expertise in electrical subject matter associated with designing transmission lines

  • Other duties may be assigned directly or through others as needed or required including but not limited to, customer engagement and/or customer driven projects.

Education & Experience :

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical, Civil, and/or Mechanical Engineering required.

  • Applicants capable of being licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas encouraged to apply.

  • Applicants with experience with the Certificate of Convenience and Necessity (“CCN”) progress encouraged to apply.

Engineer :

  • 1 year of PLS-CADD modeling experience required.

  • Basic knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).

Staff Engineer :

  • 3 years of PLS-CADD modeling experience required.

  • 1 year of PLS-Pole and/or PLS-Tower modeling experience required.

  • Must have competence to manage and design transmission line projects independently.

  • Ability to effectively communicate complex subject matter and company issues to vendor and Oncor Electric Delivery employees.

  • High level of knowledge in at least one specific area related to Transmission Line subject matter.

  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).

Senior Engineer :

  • 5 years of PLS-CADD modeling experience required.

  • 3 years of PLS-Pole and/or PLS-Tower modeling experience required.

  • 2 years of Project Management experience managing large scale projects or initiatives required.

  • Must have competence to manage and design transmission line projects independently.

  • Effectively communicates and resolves minor issues with other work groups while presenting detailed documentation and plans ranging from basic to slightly complex design.

  • Effectively manages a moderate number of projects while maintaining work product quality, reliability, and volume.

  • Advanced level of knowledge in at least one specific area related to Transmission Line subject matter.

  • Expert knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).

Travel :

  • up to 25%
