Position Summary

As an Engineer within our Transmission Planning team at Oncor, you’ll perform engineering studies of Oncor’s transmission system in the areas of dynamic stability, steady-state power flow, electromagnetic transients (EMT), small signal stability, and other technical studies essential for the reliable and optimized operation of the Oncor transmission system. This role is also critical in the development of transmission plans and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Regional Planning Group submittals, ensuring compliance with North America Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and ERCOT requirements.

Key Responsibilities :

Directly or through others, the incumbent will:

  • Performs Oncor’s Transmission Plan Annual Assessment analysis in accordance with NERC and ERCOT reliability standards to ensure the timely achievement of compliance requirements.

  • Prepare plans and operating actions needed to ensure compliance with the Reliability Standards consistent with good engineering practices and personnel and public safety requirements and effectively document these plans and operating actions and present them to management for approval.

  • Performs activities that support the determination of transmission project need as being either reliability driven or economically driven, in a manner consistent with ERCOT methods.

  • Performs production-cost studies internally or reviews study results performed by external consultants, in order to determine if the ERCOT economic criteria for a given transmission project is met, as well as, to determine the benefit/cost ratio of the identified project alternatives.

  • Analyzes Oncor transmission systems to identify potential system upgrade needs and prepare Transmission plans and Regional Planning Group submittals by performing power flow analysis, including and Optimal Power Flow and Security Constrained Optimal Power Flow.

  • Supports other groups in Assets Planning by creating sets of operating scenarios as generation and load patterns evolve.

  • Assesses ERCOT/Oncor transmission system congestion events, including the causes, future risks, and identifies operating configurations that may help prevent recurrence.

  • Develops tools to improve work efficiency.

  • Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with industry colleagues such as peer utility staff, ERCOT Staff and other ERCOT stakeholders’ staff, to effectively resolve issues of common need and interests.

  • Performs all essential aspects and functions of the job as well as any other specific job requirements.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university is required.

  • Applicants with a higher education specializing in Power Systems are encouraged to apply.

Experience

  • Minimum six years of applicable utility engineering experience or equivalent is required.

  • Applicants with experience in one or more of the following aspects are encouraged to apply: transmission planning, engineering, power system operation, modeling and analysis.

  • Applicants with familiarity of the Oncor Transmission system and ERCOT Nodal Market are encouraged to apply.

  • Applicants with knowledge of ERCOT practices associated with ERCOT transmission modeling and power flow assessment, including the ERCOT Planning Guide and ERCOT Protocols are encouraged to apply.

  • Experience in performing power engineering studies such as:

  1. Production-cost analysis using UPLAN, ProMod, DAYZER or similar

  2. Power flow using PSS/E, preferably including using Python

  3. Power flow using PowerWorld, preferably including using SimAuto

  4. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint, preferably including using VBA

Skills

  • Ability to work independently and on a team

  • Capable to lead and train other engineers in the team

  • Strong communication skills, including technical writing and oral communication
