AltaGas - Rail Operator

Location: AltaGas North Pine Facility - 40 km Northwest of Fort St. John, BC

Schedule: 7 days on, 7 days off, 12-hour shifts, including days and nights

Salary: $81,759.13 to $91,098.05 per annum, depending on experience. The North Pine facility also provides a bi-weekly Northern Living Allowance and Travel Allowance

Join the AltaGas team as a Rail Operator at our North Pine Facility and play a key role in ensuring our safe and efficient operations! We are looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented Rail Operator who excels in a fast-paced environment, prioritizes safety, and has a strong understanding of rail yard operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely and efficiently load railcars with LPGs (Propane and Butane) following all operational procedures.

  • Conduct snow removal on railway tracks and within the rail yard to maintain safe operations.

  • Operate a railcar mover and act as a conductor to move railcars within the yard.

  • Ensure the smooth and safe operation of the Rail Offloading Facility, adhering to all safety regulations.

  • Follow Canadian Railway Operating Rules and ensure compliance while operating within the rail yard.

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the rail system, including loading procedures and yard management, ensuring clear communication with all team members.

  • Verify railcars are properly loaded, sealed, and ready for shipment, maintaining high standards of accuracy and efficiency.

  • Coordinate with the commercial team daily to organize the loading schedule and manage rail yard logistics for shipping and receiving railcars.

  • Demonstrate awareness and focus on improving loading efficiencies and coordinating rail yard activities for optimal operations.

  • Actively pursue skill development and knowledge enhancement to advance within the Rail Operations Training Program.

  • Adhere to safety best practices, ensuring compliance with all safety and operating procedures.

  • Issue permits, conduct CJCs (Critical Job Controls), and perform hazard assessments when required.

  • Report any health, safety, security, or environmental concerns using the EHS management system.

  • Lead by example by promoting good housekeeping practices throughout the rail yard.

  • Identify, report, and communicate equipment and safety issues through systems such as MAXIMO, Hazard IDs, and Operations Logs.

  • Maintain competency in loading and switching operations by reviewing Rail Operations Procedures, Lockout Procedures, and conducting proficiency tests.

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Prior experience in the oil and gas industry, operating heavy equipment, or rail loading experience is considered an asset.

  • Ability to quickly identify and respond to operational deviations to maintain safe working conditions and minimize downtime.

  • Strong understanding of environmental impacts, health, safety, and security risks in the rail yard.

  • Certifications in H2S Alive, First Aid, CPR, and Confined Space Entry are required.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively within the team and across departments.

Where You'll Work:

The North Pine Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) Facility is located approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Fort St. John, British Columbia. The 20,000 Bbls/d facility is connected to existing AltaGas infrastructure. The facility fractionates NGL feed into end products of Propane, Butane, and Condensate. The North Pine Facility has access to the Canadian National Railway rail network, allowing for the transportation of propane, butane, and condensate to North American markets. This includes shipping propane to AltaGas’ Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal.
