Transmission Design Engineer/Estimator

Technical & Project Solutions (T&PS), Transmission Estimating Dept.

This position will be located in Forest Park, GA (Metro-Atlanta)

This job posting will fill multiple positions within the Transmission Estimating department, which consists of Transmission Lines, Substation Physical, Substation Protection & Controls, and Civil Site Design.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position is responsible for providing project scoping, estimating, and conceptual design services in support of the Operating Company’s transmission line/substation/civil projects. The position will be responsible for supporting the Operating Company planning and budgeting processes by providing complete and accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs associated with transmission line/substation/civil projects. The position will require field visits and may involve occasional overnight travel.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create a safe work environment through personal commitment to safety.

  • Apply line/substation/civil engineering expertise to accurately "scope" projects and to provide quality cost and duration estimates in a timely fashion.

  • Develop detailed project scopes and conceptual design packages used to produce accurate cost estimates and project schedules and as the basis for detailed design activities.

  • Provide timely and accurate cost estimates to customers including Project Management, Transmission Planning, and Transmission Maintenance Support to facilitate budget development and management.

  • Serve as the transmission line/substation/civil engineering representative on scoping and site selection committees and prepare conceptual designs as required to support the process.

  • Provide input on the development and refinement of line/substation/civil engineering estimating units used in the estimating system (TEAMS) to ensure accurate estimates of equipment, material, labor durations, and total costs.

  • Provide work direction and oversight for supplemental staff as needed.

  • Participate in and support Southern Company Transmission activities and initiatives.

  • Serve as a damage assessment team member after major storms after receiving the company-provided training.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)

Education:

  • BS Engineering or Engineering Technology degree is preferred.

  • BS Engineering or Engineering Technology degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering is preferred.

  • Two-year degree from a technical school/university or significant related work experience may be considered in lieu of BS degree.

  • Professional Engineering (P.E.) license is preferred.

Experience:

  • Prior experience in power utility planning, design, construction, operations or maintenance is strongly preferred.

  • Experience in transmission line/substation/civil design is strongly preferred.

  • Prior experience in transmission project development and cost estimating is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • General knowledge of transmission planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance.

  • General knowledge of the activities associated with surveying, land acquisition, and obtaining easements.

  • Working knowledge of Operating Company processes, procedures and tools used in the development of transmission line/substation/civil projects.

  • Working knowledge of the SCST D&MS design standards, processes, procedures, and tools (ACADE, PLSCADD, ACAD & TEAMS) used to scope, estimate, and design transmission line/substation/civil projects.

  • Detailed knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing the design and construction of transmission line/substation/civil projects.

  • Detailed knowledge of transmission line/substation/civil cost estimating.

  • Detailed knowledge of transmission line/substation/civil construction methods, equipment, techniques, and associated costs.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products and transmission software applications currently in use to estimate and design transmission line/substation/civil projects.

  • Time management and organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines.

  • Exhibits strong problem solving, oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to establish and maintain peer and customer relationships across organizational lines.

  • Proven ability to build consensus and achieve results through the effective use of persuasive communication and formal presentation skills.

ADDITIONALS DETAILS:

Travel:

  • Up to 25% travel should be expected within the Southern Company footprint

  • Travel frequency and location will be dictated by the specific project(s) supported

Relocation/Telecommuting:

  • Some relocation assistance may be available for this position if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Atlanta area.

  • This position may have some flexibility for remote teleworking, with the expectation that the successful candidate would be willing to travel to Forest Park and/or project site(s) on a routine and as-needed basis.
