Position Summary

The Senior Indirect Tax Accountant at South Jersey Industries will be responsible for the filings of all U.S. indirect tax compliance, including but not limited to sales and use tax and personal property tax. In addition, the Senior Indirect Tax Accountant will support management to ensure SJI complies with various state requirements and will assist with tax research to provide technical support on all indirect tax matters. This role will report directly to the Director of Tax Accounting, and partner with operations, finance, IT, and external advisors to address complex sales tax issues. Essential Functions:

  • Prepare and file all indirect tax returns, including sales and use tax and personal property tax; assist with other non-income tax related filings as needed

  • Establish and maintain a consolidated compliance calendar for all required state and local tax jurisdictions

  • Reconcile various sales tax reports with monthly sales data and general ledger; perform journal entries related to indirect taxes

  • Investigate and resolve tax notices received

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures supporting best practices around transaction taxes

  • Monitor changes in sales tax rates to ensure that updated rates are effectively communicated, implemented, and validated; support multistate sales and use tax audits and tax controversy

  • Maintain Vertex system and conduct internal system audits for tax compliance and accuracy; manage exemption certificate compliance

  • Assist with various tax consulting projects related to tax planning, taxability studies, nexus analyses, refund claims, credits, and incentives; assist in accurately accruing use tax on supplier invoices, and in researching, documenting, and maintaining a tax matrix encompassing all tax filing regulations

Qualifications

Required Background:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field with 5 years of relevant experience, or; Master’s degree with 3 years of relevant experience

  • Additional years of work experience may be considered in lieu of degree

  • Strong experience working at a public accounting firm and/or corporate tax department, primarily focused on indirect tax

Required Skills:

  • Superb analytical, accounting and tax research skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Self-starting, with strong self-motivation and the ability to work independently

Preferred Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Workday and Vertex
