Omaha Public Power District Designer II (Substation Engineering) in Elkhorn, Nebraska

OPPD is seeking a Designer II (Sustation Engineering) to join the team. This position completes assignments of a technical nature requiring independent judgment and skill in the design and construction of OPPD¿s Distribution, Transmission or Substation facilities under the direction of a licensed engineer. Duties may be narrowly or broadly focused on the Responsibilities and Accountabilities that follow.

Responsibilities:

  1. Design and construct OPPD¿s Distribution, Transmission or Substation facilities
  • Creates and updates detailed civil, structural, and electrical engineering work order designs under the supervision of a qualified engineer for the use of creating official work order drawings and records of installations, equipment, and components from written and verbal instructions and field information.

  • Completes the preparation of accurate and timely designs with engineering approval when required including field surveys, procedures, material procurement, work orders, estimates, permits, contracts and (if applicable) atlases for the construction and modification of the assigned project.

  • Provides information, computations under the supervision of a qualified engineer, and drawings utilizing various computer applications to define civil, structural, and electrical requirements for projects.

  • Checks drawings, records, and other deliverables for accuracy and completeness.

  • Maintains a general understanding of all applicable local, state, and federal governmental requirements, Codes, Industry standards, and internal procedures and policies.

  • Completes design review and as built inspections for compliance with design specifications.

  • Assist in the analytics of bids, special studies, and projects related to department operations.

  • Operates engineering scanning, copying, and plotting equipment.

    Qualifications

    Required:

  • High School diploma or GED is required

  • Minimum of one (1) years’ experience in CADD, GIS or similar design tools; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

  • Demonstrated effective analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned projects.

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete multiple projects simultaneously with frequent changing priorities.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to interact with internal and external customers in a professional and respectful manner.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite products.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

    Desired:

  • Prior experience in high voltage transmission, substation, or distribution.

  • Proficiency in AutoDesk AutoCAD, Inventor, Vault-Pro, Ventyx (Asset Suite) or PLS-CADD.

  • Prior experience with 3D modeling in AutoDesk Inventor using SBS Substation Design Suite (SDS) modules.

  • Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Electrical / Electronic Engineering Technology or Computer Aided Design and Drafting.
