Emergency Response: Yes – Must be available to perform a primary assignment in support of DTE’s emergency response to storms or other events that impact service to our customers.

Job Summary

Provides advanced expertise and guidance on legal services in matters of significant complexity, sensitivity, and financial impact to the company. Serves as senior expert with in-depth legal skills in one or more specialized areas. Leads others in legal projects and mentors other attorneys and legal staff. Represents company interests in formal and informal legal proceedings, including federal, state or local judicial, or dispute resolution processes. Span of control: 0; individual contributor.

Key Accountabilities

  • Regularly participates in the resolution of complex, sensitive, and/or financially significant legal matters and ensures resolution in an efficient manner

  • Researches legal principles and precedents, including consulting with outside legal counsel

  • Anticipates significant legal issues in practice area of expertise and develops innovative legal solutions that support business objectives

  • Drafts and executes legal documents, including gathering relevant information using multiple sources and methods

  • Develops legal resolutions with business problems in one or more specialized areas of legal practice

  • Provides expert guidance and work instructions to other professional, paraprofessional, and staff

  • Works without supervision and collaborates with all levels of internal clients

  • Serves as subject matter expert in legal matters and provides recommendations to leadership

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited law school and admitted to the bar in employee’s state of residence

  • 15 years of experience as a licensed attorney in any of the following areas: commercial transactions and/or mergers and acquisitions, federal and state regulatory law (energy), environmental, litigation, corporate finance and/or governance, and labor and employment law

Other Requirements:

· Exhibits exceptional verbal, written and presentation communication skills

· Proficient with computers and office software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.)

· Advanced analytic and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify key issues from a broad range of alternatives and recommend optimal solutions for various situations

· Ability to work in a team and/or matrix structure, supporting multiple clients, procedures, and policy

· Ability to cope with multiple demands from leaders, peers, and subordinates in a positive and even-handed fashion; displays calm demeanor under pressure

· Competent with prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, issues, or projects, including high-visibility initiatives that require innovation, teamwork, and planning

· Initiates new ideas and approaches, challenges orthodox practices and approaches with reasonable and sound alternatives.

Preferred:

  • Preferred licensed attorney with State or Federal regulatory experience.

  • Experience in energy industry

  • Experience practicing in an administrative forum (MPSC/FERC) in the field of energy or public utility law/regulation.
