Operations Engineering (OE) assists real-time operations on DTE Energy’s electric grid. OE ensures that DTE Energy’s SCADA and EMS provide accurate information through display and database maintenance. OE also provides customer restoration plans, approves the shutdowns of equipment, reviews major alterations to the bulk electric system, and provides ways to correct voltage violations. In general, Operation Engineering provides operating solutions for electric system so that customers have reliable power within standardized voltage parameters.

Plans and conducts engineering-related activities requiring the use of advanced techniques and the modification/extension of theories, precepts, engineering practice and related science/disciplines, including practical field experience. Incumbents are typically recognized for their expertise across a broad spectrum of issues arising from a thorough engineering knowledge and experience base, and have the authority to make decisions on engineering problems and methods applicable to the resolution of important issues. They may consult other engineers or specialists concerning unusual problems and developments. This is the top rung of the Company’s engineering hierarchy that precedes the split into managerial or technical expert career paths. Primary accountabilities may vary (depending on the discipline or organization). Span of control = 0; this is an individual contributor job, although incumbent’s may guide, coordinate, assist and/or mentor less experienced engineers and technical support staff, and provide input in the performance management process.


  • Investigates new technology, material and equipment, with application to safety, electrical system reliability, performance and cost.

  • Renders sound engineering decisions - under potential time constraints with limited supervisory input.

  • Performs assigned (or initiates) engineering studies, proposing solutions to engineering-related problems; develops models and analyzes data to support improvement programs, techniques & solutions; makes or assists in presentations of engineering-related projects to all levels of management & external parties (contractors, customers, etc.)

  • Prepares plans, specifications, work instructions and cost estimates for projects requiring engineering services.

  • Coaches/mentors, and provides ongoing constructive feedback to less experienced engineering & technical personnel.

  • Proposes, initiates and implements electrical system field and design changes, and performance improvements.

  • Participates in the review and creation of test procedures for new technologies, materials and equipment.

  • May lead projects and/or project teams (reviewing progress and evaluating results), mentoring, providing guidance and technical direction to less experienced engineering and technical staff.

  • May coordinate or play a primary role in a group’s continuous improvement (CI) efforts: designing processes; establishing quality/quantity standards & metrics; collecting, refining, adapting & communicating ‘best practices’; sharing knowledge and developing staff in a systematic fashion. Uses process design outcomes to solve problems.

  • Initiates new ideas and approaches; challenges prevailing practices & approaches with reasonably sound alternatives.



  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology & the knowledge and capabilities typically acquired through 5-plus years of job-relevant experience. May require initial and/or periodic drug or fitness-for-duty testing, and the ability to report to different locations; incumbents are responsible for their own transportation.


  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, civil, or other engineering discipline dictated by the given functional area. Proficient in computer applications/software applicable to the relevant area/discipline.

  • Proficient ‘active listening’, verbal, written and presentation skills; communicates clearly, with credibility and confidence. Ability to present project results & research to senior- & executive-level business unit leadership.

  • Intermediate-to-advanced analytical and project management skills; ability to identify key issues from a broad range of alternatives, and recommend optimal solutions for various situations.

  • Broad understanding of power generation, transmission, distribution and regional power dispatch issues.

  • Ability to work in a ‘team’ and/or ‘matrixed’ structure, supporting multiple clients.

  • Flexibility to work with shifting priorities; embrace new/evolving responsibilities; balances multiple demands from superiors, peers and less experienced engineering& technical personnel in a positive and even-handed fashion; displays a calm demeanor under pressure.

  • Ability to conduct effective & efficient meetings; manages meetings with optimal results.

  • Initiates new ideas and approaches; challenges prevailing practices & approaches with reasonably sound alternatives.

  • Ability to apply project planning & implementation and/or CI principles to affect tangible, positive outcomes.
