MidAmerican Energy Company Paralegal/Sr Paralegal in Des Moines, Iowa

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function) The paralegal provides a wide range of professional legal support services to attorneys across a wide range of civil, administrative and regulatory matters in the form of basic legal research; summarizing legal documents; providing mediation, litigation pre-trial, hearing and conference preparation and discovery support; analyzing data; drafting, proofing and editing legal and business documents, filings, and communications; and overseeing and guiding responses to a variety of civil, criminal and administrative subpoenas and requests for documents, data, or information. The position involves working in a professional environment and occasional contact with the public, governmental agencies, law firms, management and co-workers in other business units. Typical Duties Perform legal and business research and communicate findings in memoranda; create electronic resource libraries as needed. (10-15%) Collect, review and organize data, information, and documents; create procedures for collection, storage, maintenance, and retention of information and files; create procedures for law department or corporate practices; analyze or derive statistical or other mathematical data. (15-20%) Locate and interview potential witnesses and subject matter experts; coordinate communications between witnesses, experts and attorneys, in-house counsels and/or company personnel and outside counsels. (10-15%) Draft, edit, proof, revise and file or transmit agreements, answers, responses, discoveries, motions, briefs, filings and other documents and communications in appropriate format and subject to an attorney's final approval. (10-15%) Monitor developments in MidAmerican Energy Company's pending cases and claims; report to attorneys and management as necessary. (5-10%) Draft periodic legal reports and summaries for management; create, maintain and update charts of legal activities and expenses. (5-10%) Create and maintain paper and electronic files for trademarks, litigation and other claims. (5-10%) Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. (0-5%) Bachelor's degree. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.) Persons with a certified legal assistant (CLA), certified paralegal (CP) or advanced paralegal (AP) designation will be given preference. Two or more years working experience in a legal environment is required for the sr paralegal level. Previous experience in employment, litigation, or the energy industry helpful. Demonstrated understanding of basic legal terms, proficiency in legal, internet and traditional research tools. Strong organizational skills, particularly working with document control. Strong personal computer skills; proficient in Word and Excel. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Effective analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of company/corporate information. Ability to build relationships with a variety of employees and non-employees. Ability to analyze and/or derive statistical or other mathematical data.
