MidAmerican Energy Company Energy Cost Analyst/Senior Energy Cost Analyst in Des Moines, Iowa

This is a multi-level posting. Candidates may be considered for any of the posted levels, depending on their level of experience and depth of expertise. Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function) Reconcile energy system volumes with counterparty statements. Create pipeline, gas storage transmission and transportation reconciliations. Analyze purchased energy volumes and reconcile to sales volumes. Analyze, process, reconcile and initial approval of all reservation, capacity, commodity, supplier, transport, transmission, SO2 allowances, fuel oil, coal and propane payable invoices. Reconcile settlements for various pipelines, transmission, counterparties, revenue and costs to the general ledger. Create journal entries to record monthly estimated and actual results and provide detail support documentation. This position ensures accurate accounting for above-the-line, below-the-line and different products. Typical Duties Confirm, analyze, process, reconcile and initial approval of all reservation, capacity, transmission, commodity bills, supplier, transport, SO2 allowances, fuel oil, coal and propane payable invoices. This includes - (40%) Energy reconciliation between invoiced volumes, pipeline receipt and off-system sales volumes. Rate verification and reconciliation between energy supply invoices, system data and published rates in industry reports. Reconcile commodity invoices to system data. Identify and resolve any discrepancies. Analysis is completed on volumes, invoices, accruals during the monthly imbalance reconciliation. Reconcile gas storage and multiple gas pool inventory balances. Provide cost of gas calculations for monthly PGA estimate and final. Research and analyze payables, receivable and issues for MEC above-the-line, below-the-line, unregulated retail services and Northern Natural Gas. Provide direction on procedures, policies and miscellaneous items to accounting specialists. (15%) Interpret contract pricing agreements, calculate customer pricing and ensure that customer revenue invoice are accurate and timely. Reconcile, settle and complete journal entries to record the financial derivatives results. (15%) Record MEC regulated and unregulated cash receipts and create related monthly receivable reports. Coordinate with external customers and risk management to provide monthly netting of receivables and payables. Collect outstanding customer receivable balances. (10%) Provide revenue statistics to the tax department and resolve customer sale tax issues in multiple states. Research and respond to regulatory data requests in the energy environment. (10%) Develop system recommendations for programming maintenance and enhancements. Coordinate with IT, contract programmers, risk management and the trading area for system conversions. (5%) Performs other responsibilities as requested. (5%) Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business or equivalent related work experience. (Typically, six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.) A minimum of 5 years of experience with the gas industry or 5-7 years of intensive gas supply and accounting experience dealing with a gas utility for the Energy Cost Analyst level. A minimum of 7 years of experience with the gas industry or 7-10 years of intensive gas supply and accounting experience dealing with a gas utility for the Senior Energy Cost Analyst level. Cost accounting background is a plus. Require verbal and written communication skills to transmit accurate and understandable information to department and managers. Must have the ability to handle multiple issues simultaneously in a fast-paced environment concurrently. Advanced analytical skills to recognize data patterns, information or events to draw logical conclusions, problem-solve and make recommendations.
