During COVID-19 Pandemic this position may require the ability to temporarily work remote within the company service territory until company protocol dictates return to the office criteria has been met. This position can be based in either Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN.

Please note that this position requires the ability to respond to field emergencies 24/7/365.

Position Summary

Provides visionary and strategic leadership for the Claims Services Department in the General Counsel organization. Oversees department that is responsible for major incident investigations involving gas, electric and steam facilities. Develops and ensures consistency in practices and procedures between regional claims teams and directly manages regional managers and principal investigators. Has overall responsibility for maintaining and expanding role of Claims Services Department in an efficient, cost effective manner. Develops and maintains relationships with relevant community agencies, including police and fire departments. Manages relationship between Claims Services department and Legal Services to ensure fulfillment of legal needs, to provide creative ideas for additional claims support, and to ensure Claims Services receives necessary reciprocal information and support. Fiscally responsible for the Claims Services department budget. Available 24/7 to monitor, provide direction, supervise and provide technical expertise on major incident investigations. Partners with other business unit leadership to ensure cost effective integration and utilization of processes and resources.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to the Claims Services Department to ensure strategic implementation, evaluation and administration of processes, programs and policies that drive high quality investigation and ensure compliance with Xcel Energy’s vision, mission, values and goals.

  • Develop and ensure consistency in practices and procedures between regional claims teams and directly manage regional managers and principal investigators. Maintain and expand role of Claims Services Department in an efficient, cost effective manner.

  • Manage relationship between Claims Services department and Legal Services to ensure fulfillment of legal needs, to provide creative ideas for additional claims support, and to ensure Claims Services receives necessary reciprocal information and support.

  • Develop and maintain working relationships with State and Federal regulatory agencies as well as relevant community agencies, such as police and fire departments.

  • Monitor, provide direction, supervise and provide technical expertise to investigative team on major incident investigations, 24/7/365.

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other business unit leadership to ensure cost effective integration and utilization of processes and resources.

  • Manage operating budget, identify department priorities, and forecast future needs. Develop solutions for budget deficiencies, and identify approaches to reduce costs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge.

  • Professional investigative certification preferred.

  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in gas or electric utility required.

  • Demonstrated experience with and understanding of legal concepts and processes is required.

  • Two years management/supervisory experience required, including experience managing complex, high profile investigations.

  • Working knowledge of National Electric Safety Code, relevant portions of Code of Federal Regulations (including 49 CFR Part 192), and NFPA 921 is required.

  • Competent in the use of basic Microsoft office programs and specialized programs specific to Claims Services Department is required.

  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record and personal transportation required.

  • Required availability 24/7/365 to monitor, provide direction, supervise and provide technical expertise on major incident investigations.

This position requires a behavioral assessment prior to being considered for an interview.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $94,500 to $134,166 per year
