Qualifications
The Substation Technician will perform electrical construction, maintenance or repair work on the Company’s system including substations and power plant switchyards. There are three levels of this job.
Under close supervision, assists Levels II, III, and Senior Substation Technician. With experience and under direct supervisor, works where the tasks is confined to the de-energized or energized not over 250 volt conductor equipment.
Entry Level
High School Diploma or the equivalent and a valid CDL driver’s license with a tanker endorsement within 8 months of becoming a Substation Electrician.
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Candidate must successfully complete the physical abilities test as well as the Substation Technician Job Sampling Assessment.
Ability to work outdoors with physical exertion. The employee is occasionally required to perform work in adverse weather conditions. Activities include frequent hand-eye coordination skills to operate electronic test equipment, personal computers and power/hand tools. The position also requires communication by two-way radio and telephone. The employee must be able to identify and possess the requisite skills necessary to use all the basic tools (list of several tools to be included) as provided by the company.
The position requires the employee to possess and demonstrate the following physical and mental/psychological abilities.
Strength & Agility
Exert force of 50-100 pounds occasionally or 25-50 pounds frequently in order to push, pull or move objects. Lift or carry 25-50 pounds frequently and 10-20 pounds constantly.
Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, push/pull, twist at the waist, reach below or at the shoulder level and occasionally above the shoulder level. Occasionally sit, crouch, kneel and climb stairs, ladders or other apparatus and work on uneven terrain.
Occasionally climb and perform work on substation equipment and structures at heights of up to 60 feet for an extended period of time.
Be able to work around noisy equipment, dirty conditions, and occasionally work in trenches or confined spaces.
Successful completion of the Substation Skill Performance Assessment.
Vision
- Possess visual acuity which could be corrected sufficiently to perform essential functions of the position; average depth perception and the ability to verify proper color convention, often involving small components and wiring. The candidate must be able to recognize the following colors (brown, white, red, green, black, blue and orange.
Hearing
- Possess hearing ability to effectively hear and comprehend oral instructions and communication.
Fully Qualified
A minimum of six years experience performing work on electrical substation and switchyard facilities as a Substation Technician Level I, II and III or the equivalent, and demonstrate the ability to perform the tasks of the job.
Must successfully complete the Company’s Substation Technician training program and continue to pass job related skills verification.
This position requires cyber or physical access to designated secured areas. Employees who career preference for this position must successfully pass a background check in order to be awarded the position.
