AES’ Hydrogen Innovation Hub in Dayton, OH will serve as the platform for generating strategic insights and developing internal technical capabilities. As Senior Operations Lead, you will lead operations at the Hydrogen Innovation Hub. As part of the innovation team, expect to participate in all phases of technology validation, from ideation, R&D, pilot scale validation, scale up and operations.
As the operations lead, you will set an example for how AES will safely operate our hydrogen production facilities and be responsible for executing test programs to generate the technical insights required to develop new technology.
A successful candidate will have an extensive background in pilot scale or commercial scale operations in the hydrogen or other relevant industries (chemical process industries, oil and gas, energy, chemicals, power/electric, mining or water) with a ‘safety first’ mindset. You must be entrepreneurial and creative to thrive in a fast-paced environment full of ambiguity and uncertainty. Ideally, you will also have broad experience developing new technology at pilot scale and be mechanically inclined to operate and maintain mechanical equipment.
You will operate in a start-up like environment with the resources of a large corporation, focusing on rapid execution to gain speed to insight. Expect to interact with internal stakeholders across AES and our utilities, including senior management, and external stakeholders including EPCs, vendors, regulatory authorities, and strategic partners.
Primary Responsibilities:
Lead Operations at the AES’ Hydrogen Innovation Hub
Execute test plans developed in collaboration with the innovation team
Institute and champion standard processes in hydrogen safety by owning site HSE responsibilities
Commission and operate hydrogen electrolyzers, compressors and hydrogen storage
Develop and implement site operating procedures and protocols, including:
Safe operating procedures, LOTO, management of change and O&M program
Environmental reporting requirements
Document control and inventory management
Manage the operating budget and resource scheduling
Develop databases to collect, analyze and store operating data
Perform maintenance on installed equipment
If qualified, additional responsibilities may include
Project/Construction management during initial construction or facility upgrade projects
Update and manage document control/as-builts of typical engineering drawings and lists: PFD, P&ID, SLD, BOM & Equipment lists
Co-develop testing plans to support the product roadmap
Collect and analyze operating data to generate core insights that support validation of new product features
Qualifications:
Founder’s mentality : A passion for getting things done and a “make it happen” attitude with an intellectual curiosity. You will question assumptions to generate insights and build novel solutions that overcome unexpected challenges.
Experience : A minimum of 10 years of work experience in an operations role or environment.
At least 3 years of operations experience in a pilot or laboratory setting, including hands-on experience with installation and maintenance of tubing, small bore pipe and valves and mechanical equipment is preferred.
Technical backgrounds, such as a Bachelor of Science or Engineering, are desirable, but not required.
Other applicable experience may include commissioning, technical support and service, PLC operation and programming, construction management, instrumentation installation and calibration, troubleshooting and maintenance of motors and electrical equipment.
Expertise : Proven experience in all aspects of pilot scale operations, including facilities that use industrial automation and controls. Deep familiarity with developing and validating new technologies in the hydrogen, chemicals or oil and gas industries preferred.
Mindset : Capability to work dynamically and collaboratively across multiple teams in a technical environment with minimal direction. Excellent communication skills. Results-oriented, “can-do” attitude, and “get things done” mindset; comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity; no compromise on attention to quality and details.
Technology proficiency: Demonstrated understanding of the operation of equipment in typical hydrogen production facilities.
Technical understanding of hydrogen electrolyzers, process and power plant control systems, and dispatch algorithms are a plus.
